DiSefan's 26' Whale Boat in 1/72 printed by Shapeways in Frosted Ultra Detail.

Image
Cleaned wax with Goo Gone then Dawn under hot water. Air Erased using aluminum oxide then baking soda at 50 psi. Added a some styrene to the side.

Image
Primed with Tamiya Sprayer Primer and then Mr. Surfacer on top. Will need some sanding and detailing.
Image
Top View. It is hollow underneath the front deck with is kind of neat on a single piece. The cut lines are much softer on the Frost Ultra than on the plastic version.

Nothing much, but added .060" Channels over the 2 bulkheads and added some styrene around the bow.

In a weak moment I picked up a damaged Aqua Craft 1/72 Fletcher. It really didn't take much to bring it back to stock. I'm testing the waters with a small project and at least for now as a using the Aqua Craft as display platform. If this succeeds then I'll purchase another Whale Boat. If it turns into a debacle I still have an intact ship which would have resale potential. Frankly, my track record hasn't been so good.....

The future has arrived.

Amazed at the crispness.

Added bench behind the engine out of styrene with a counter sunk fill cap and a notch for the transmission shifter. Had to deviate a little on seat height and notch the bench to clear the engine. I am guessing this is a Mark I Whale Boat, and have been using the USS Slater's Whale Boat a as reference of an early type. Hoping I am not too far off base.

Samson Post were added (.040x .040) and boat's bell.

Not a whole lot of progress. Added some gauges to the engine and carved some cleats for the bow.

Thanks guys. Added the bilge line and exit hole on the side. On the MK II boats the exhaust came off the engine front and made a "T" along the bulkhead and exited out both sides. Never really figured out where the exhaust was on the early boats. There is a video on You Tube of a crew out in the USS Slater's Whale Boat that covers most angles.
The rail and rudder arm made from brass rod. It was easier just to snap the rudder off and drill it free from the boat. If this in mounted on a davit it will be interesting to see if the rail will clear and allow for proper height on the ship. Most pictures I looked at showed the rail and rudder arm removed when stowed, however, there a few that showed the rail in place while stowed though.
Did quite a bit of sanding on the hull with course sanding sticks. Will probably hit it again with Mr. Surfacer plus another round of sanding to get the cut lines out.
