Hi, dear all! Here is my new project, the IJN carrier Akagi. I started to build it a few months ago and most likely will spend the rest 2020 on it. I chose Hasegawa's kit instead of Fujimi's better-looking Akagi because of its accurate hull. (Dealing with the hull is the most tiring thing when building a ship isnt it?)

Hollow to make the air inlets of the boiler room:

Also cut off the catways for thickness:

I picked Hasegawa Kirishima over fujimi also beacause of more accurate hull but bloody hell, the rest of the kit is a disaster.
I hope you get better results with Akagi!

The Hasegawa flight deck is also more accurate, planking-wise  .

Great work.

Following with great interest!

What are those brass inserts you used for the portholes?

H's Kirishima was released in 1994. As an old kit it is supposed to be "not that good". H did has a bad Akagi version 50 years ago yet the one I used is another version by new tool released in 2014(Not good enough yet totally acceptable). Fujimi released its akagi in 2010 and also made a new one in 2016 against H's. Akagi is a famous and welcomed theme in East Asia so it's normal to see competition among kit companies.

To be fair, Fujimi's newest Akagi is the best of all despite the hull under the water line. It should be the primary choise especially when one wants to build a water line ship. For me, however, the accuration of the hull's shape is everything.

Thanks, Dan!

The original plastic flight deck is fine but the details are stll kind of over scale. I will use a PE deck instead.

The real porthole frame is made of brass, and it will be extreamly hard to color. Yet if I use copper tubes to make them, I may get what I want cleaning the brass part with a drill after painting.

Started to build the middle hanger:

I cut off the whole AA gun deck for its over scale wall thickness, which would be an obstacle for me to make the #2 elevator.

Wow, an ambitious project, very well executed! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
Akagi must be one of the most complex carrier projects one can embark on...

That PE is very impressive! I would have thought there is plenty of PE for 1/700 Akagi on the market though? But nothing beats home-made (and home-researched) stuff of course... ;)

The cockpit glazing of the aircraft looks especially good. Is it painted PE over plastic clear part?
