Hello all. Lurked this forum for years admiring the work, learning, and waiting until I had time to start. It's been slow going, struggling through, wanting everything to be perfect but knowing it won't be. All in good time. Picked up Tom's 1/700 Fast Battleship PE and 20mm, 40mm, ladders, hatches, etc from Flyhawk. 5 in and 16 in barrels from Model Masters.

Using July 9th, 1943 photos from NavSource as my primary visual. In particular, this view:

http://navsource.org/archives/01/061/016105l.jpg

I had the opportunity to visit the Iowa in May - it was a great experience. I've now been on the Alabama, North Carolina, and the Iowa. I've also been on the Midway too but that's another story.

Any advice to a first time 1/700 modeler? I think my real roadblock is painting strategy. I have an air compressor and an airbrush. I think it's the mixing and testing out that is intimidating.

I think you will find at the date modeled that the ship had a vertical ladder and not an inclined ladder between the 02-03 levels below the bridge wings.

Could you be more specific? Checking the NavSource picture listed above by the bridge I see two inclined ladders, one to the right of the 5 in and one below by the two 20mm guns?

Thanks.

Small update: Experimented with best way to put on portholes. I need to find a good solution or it will be slow going over the entire ship! Just these 9 drove me nuts! I will also complete the port side of this piece with photoetch detail and attach them to superstructure.

For getting them even Id use tape as a guideline. You could also use a pencil protractor for measuring.
For getting everything in position and having time / wiggle room. Initially place them using mat varnish. its tacky and good for this job. After priming over the top everything set in place permanently. Otherwise you can always come back after your happy with placement and use thin superglue on a thin piece of wire or cat whisker ;)

Thanks for advice. Any thoughts on doing the straight tape line, drilling small diameter hole for effect, then putting on the porthole? As I look at it a bit more I wonder if there would be more 'pop' from the porthole if there was an actual hole to give depth.

Or is it not worth it?

I think I've got the primer skill figured out. I'm still a little intimidated on the airbrush. I need to get a filter too to prevent vapor condensation. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Iwata make a nice small trap you can put immediately between the airbrush and the hose. for like $6 us . See here http://www.ebay.com/bhp/airbrush-moisture-trap.
Some people use these as well as having a proper trap on the regulator. Nothing wrong with belt and braces approach :)

Hello All,

Small update - got all the starboard side portholes installed on the superstructure. Decided it wasn't worth it to drill out the portholes. The detail on the otherwise smooth surface is enough. I removed the aft piece and re-fit it...almost wished I hadn't as it was sloppy getting it back on. Glue residue is everywhere which I need to improve on. Been using a paperclip end as an applicator.

Will begin work on the port side soon. Have less documentation there but mostly mirrored from what I've seen except up by the bridge.

Any advice is welcome!

Port side progress. I might set the superstructure aside for awhile and work on other detail. Gets pretty frustrating when placement isn't right and then the glue isn't tacky enough to hold. Then scraping off the glue causes scratching.

Also posted in CASF:

Question for the Iowa crew - What would you suggest to use to reflect the MK51 FCS for the 40mm quad mounts in a 1/700 setting? I so far haven't found many examples. I do have the 1/700 Skywave US Equipment set that has a number of them - but they do seem little more than blocks with a couple of knobs on them. I think the kit has 8. I suspect I need more than that number.

Thoughts?

I believe 3D Modlelparts sells these and you can't beat the quality and price of their stuff.

Great job so far, keep it up :thumbs_up_1:

Exactly.... The 3D Model parts stuff is really good (although I prefer metal gun barrels on most things, and their 5" guns don't have metal barrels... But.....).

Here is a link to the Directors:

http://www.3dmodelparts.com/1-700-gun-d ... 16-x-mk51/

The Mk. 37 directors that come with the Set (I have two of these sets for my USS South Dakota and USS Washington) are far superior to any injection Molded Directors.

And the Mk. 51 are superior to those that come from Trumpeter, who makes some pretty detailed parts. Although, I have way more Mk. 51 directors than I am likely to ever use, given how many they give you, and how many are on a South Dakota-class or North Carolina-class BB (they give you 16 of them. Are there even 16 Quad-40s on a Late-war Iowa-class???).

Hmmm...- I may have set that one (Mk51 directors) up for an as-designed battery plus a spare or two for the Carpet Monster Sacrifice. The maximum assigned battery for an Iowa was pushing what, 20 mounts? May need to update our part! Anybody who's built an Iowa and come up short on Mk51's, pls pm me or post over on the mfg'rs thread; I'll use the info to make a revision. Also, I've had requests to make the Mk 51 a stand alone item- although they're so small (even sets of 16) I kind of like to have them hanging on to something else...

Vis a vis the vertical ladder. If you ascend the inclined ladder from 01 to 02 level, just forward of the first 5" 38 mounts, make a hard right, in that recess right below the bridge wings are inclined ladders on each side, accessing the 03 level and flag bridge area. Today the ships sport inclined ladders facing awarthships at this location.

Cheers: T
