Hi folks,

Let me introduce you my project : the King George V as it was in late 1941. I started this model a year ago and since then it is delayed almost every month ... not so easy to have a job, a family, hobbies and to built that model  . This is my first model since 20 years, I bought this model when I was working in Liverpool 15 years ago.

You will find lots of details about it on the french website of "La Royale"; hereafter two topics dealing about it :

- the beginning : http://www.laroyale-modelisme.net/t14990-king-george-v-1-400-heller?highlight=king
- update : http://www.laroyale-modelisme.net/t16947-king-george-v-1-400-heller?highlight=king

At the very beginning I thought I could built this model "from the box". But lots of friends from La Royale pushed me to improve this model and to upgrade it as the definition proposed by Heller was not correct and did not comply with the late 1941 technical definition of the battleship.

So I had to learn and test lots of new technics :
- scratch built parts
- photo-etched parts (WEM kit, GMM and L'Arsenal parts)
- acrylic paints
- air-brush
- dry-brush

Lots of pressure, somtimes I felle really depressed because of difficulties ... but my KGV Worth it :jump_1:

These are the document I'm using:

Image

This is the definition I expect to achieve:

Image

Based on my friend Nicolas' advices (Le Bosco) , I tried painting effects on the deck and I'm really happy about it

Image

Here are pictures to provide you an overview of what it looks like, parts are not glued

Image

Image

Image

My major concern at the moment is poles setup ... all the documents I've found on the web provide me diffrent setup for each battleship of the class (shape, number, position...). As Heller ones are bull**** I decided to scratch built them. Some we'll be fitted on the sides of the hull, others will be stored on the deck. And if you have usefull information about poles, feel free to share them with me :thumbs_up_1:

Image

Well, I'm a newcomer here and I hope you'll enjoy my model and the end of the assembly of this model.

See you later mates!

Jeff

Hi guys,

I worked a little bit on the model today, I finalized pole fittings on the freeboard. Poles are ready for painting.

Then I scratchbuilt a protection for the winch next to the turret.

This is a test to check size and how it would look like. I'm quite happy about it and might paint it next weekend to be sure its aspect is good.

Thanks for following this topic

Scratch details are Nice on the deck, but it takes me too much time to do them..... I've been working on cable reels too, I'll post photos soon.

Hi folks,

A little work done today .... I've tried to add the control panel of cranes. I think levers are a bit too long, but I'll cut them later. Here are the picture.

I'm not really diligent at the moment, but I should be by the end of the week

Hi guys,

Here is an update of my KGV. The Hull is now finalized with its gunze paint, no more Humbrol at all  . I also painted poles and their fittings, reels and other small stuff. I added winches and their protection on the foredeck.

Image

Image

Cranes are finalized too :thumbs_up_1:

Image

Image

Then I scratch built ventings fitted at the base of the B turret

Image

That's all for today :wave_1:

Hi guys,

I've been away for a long time but you how life is ..... job, family, well not enough time to spend on model kits.

Anyway I managed today to find time to work on my KGV and after much hesitation I did weathering effect on the hull using pastel colours. It's the first time that I use them and do weathering on a model

To make me self-confident I started to work on turrets, A and Y, to learn how to use them and choose the best home made paintbrush. Here are some pictures, hope you will appreciate them  . This is the A turret before weathering:

Image

Then I used a light grey pastel and here is the new turret...

Image

Image

Image

As I was pleased of the result, I decided to practice on the Y turret :P

Image

Image

Image

Image

The black spot is supposed to be the location of the "pom-pom", I guess this should be durty underneath

Now that I feel much confident now with this skill, I started to apply pastels on the hull : rust, light grey, black ... It's really interesting to work with such material. Here is how it looks like

Image

Image

Image

I took a picture with the Y turret fitted on the deck to make sure that weathering is not too contrasting.

Image

Next step: some spots of light grey on the red of the hull.

Image

Final touch: as I like challenges, or maybe because I'm a bit crazy, I though it would be great to had seaweed on the black line.

Image

I brushed it, and here is the result

Image

Image

Image

Image

I'm quite happy of the result and I really enjoyed using pastels. The next step will be to varnish the hull and I hope everything will be ok...

See you next time Guys!

Really nice work so far!

Are you sure KGV had the winch guards in front of 'A' turret? I know Duke of York had them, but I've never seen them on KGV. The winches themselves were there, but none of the photos I have of KGV have the guards in front of them.

Hi guys,

Work is still in progress on my KGV, even if I do not have enough time to spend on it because of my job .... Anyway, I'm working on the catapult system for the Walrus and I try to upgrade the part proposed by Heller. Not really nice as you can see.

Image

I try to found interesting pictures of this system, but unfortunately books and pictures I got are not very helpful to implement this part. That's how it looks like till today

Image

Image

I tried to add details to simulate locking systems. I'll have to add cable on each side and other stuff.

If any of you as pictures of the steam/hydraulic system witch is supposed to be fitted between the two rails on each side you are welcome :thumbs_up_1: . I'm also looking for technical documentation explaining how it works because I'm curious and I like to learn :jump_1:

Hope you will enjoy.

Cya

I recently worked on this area on my 3D model. As you will know, there are lots of photos showing the catapult, but some of the details are extremely hard to make out - those hyrdraulic things (I assume they are involved in the operation of the turntables, as they appear to interface with them in some way).

Here are some screenshots from my model - feel free to disregard since they are of course only my interpretation.

https://snag.gy/750OCT.jpg
https://snag.gy/3ZhSkq.jpg
https://snag.gy/ei32WJ.jpg

It's as accurate as I could make it. I spent way too long staring at photos for this stuff.
