If you are interested, I went into rigging in more depth in my Dreadnought build (now in completed)

The rigging is my favourite part of the build!

Approach it with enthusiasm rather than as an onerous chore and it makes it so much easier.

Good luck!

Cheers, Jabb

The first Bofors quad in place + its dedicated Mark 51 director.

Thank you. Please, share your progress with us as well.

Honestly, despite the 1/350s are impressive, their size and subsequent impact on the available storage/display space make them almost prohibitive for myself. I found out the 1/700s can still offer a huge amount of detail with all the available aftermarket enhancements. Not even talking about prices. And now, when Trumpeter re-released the Big 5s, one can build a pretty impresive line spanning from the Pennsylvania to the Iowa (which is a part of my ultimate lifetime modeling goal :-)). The only thing bothering me is an absence of Nevadas and New Mexicos. Hopefully, someone will release them one day...

Regarding the rigging - as a complete noob, several months ago I was not even considering PE. But things are going and going and ultimately you are trying to achieve as much detail and precision as possible (given the skill level, of course). So why not? One has to learn somehow...

I agree about the 1/350's. Finding room would be an issue. I would still buy the rebuilt Big-5 though. I am a noob myself concerning PE.
Very slow progress on my Colorado. I work a lot of hours, so I can't really do anything during the week. A bit unorganized since I jumped around building subassemblies. I have a couple pics on my smartphone. I'll try to start my Colorado thread this weekend.

Looking forward to.

The rear part of the Bofors complement has been installed.

I figured out I have to install the funnel stays prior to the secondary battery as the 5'' turrets would hinder a lot. However, before even trying to do this, I decided to begin with the rigging on something more simple. Just to touch it for a first time and get used to this and that. The boat cranes seemed to be an ideal stuff.

I used a Caenis 20den thread and a diluted PVA glue (contrary to Mr Griffith's advice who suggests using a diluted mucilage). I was rather surprised how easily it went. I even tried a technique of tightening the loose threads using a flow of a hot air...and it works :-). So, one more boat crane, the rear crane and I'll try to deal with the funnel stays.

Edit: Picture change.

Not very much has been done recently. However, at least I was able to install the railings on the lowest superstructure deck around the secondary battery turrets. The need to retain the firing arcs for the turrets results in these strangely isolated sections. However, that was the reality. As usual, the turrets are placed just for the illustration purposes. Not yet weathered, they will be fixed once the funnel rigging is done.

What tooling are you using for bending your photoetch?

Basically two of them:

1) The bending tool for fixing the photo-etched parts that are to be bent. Specifically, this one (JMC Hobby, the "L" size). Can't even imagine working without it (e.g. bending in hand using just tweezers etc.). It enables fixing the parts in many different ways.
Image

2) The bend itself is then done using a free razor blade (as it is thin enough to get under the fixed part nicely).

Virtually all the "sharp" bends (the Bofors shields and rails, the Mk 8 radar, the Mk 12 radar mounts, stairs, cranes, the catapult...) have been done using 1) + 2). And even when it was not possible to perform the whole shaping procedure, at least the pre-bending was done this way (and finished in hand using tweezers etc.)

The rounded bends are just a little different story, it's rather ad-hoc. The bending tool has some rounded shapes; the Mk 12 radars were shaped by just pressing a thin cylindrical object (a thin drill bit) across them when lying on a soft mouse pad; the caged foremast has been bent around a paintbrush; the rounded railings on the top of the superstructure were bent in hand around this lightsaber...

Yet another rigging test before the dreaded funnel stays... :-D

I need to get myself one of those. I mangled a few parts trying to shape them.

Apart from not been weathered yet, the rear superstructure has been finished.

Thank you, guys, but...no. Not looking good. The blobs depicting the rope tightening joints (or whatever they are) were simply too large. Removed and replaced by new ones. Much better now.

I managed to install the ropes supporting the rear funnel (just the port side). Quite surprisingly, it was not as difficult as I feared. However, I am quite seriously questioning the effort. They are virtually unnoticeable by a naked eye. I don't know. Maybe I should use something little thicker than a 20den thread.

I like the look - subtle. I wouldn't change them out.

I got the same feedback from other people so I'll keep those 20den threads. The rear funnel is done, once the forward one is finished as well, I'll tighten the threads using hot air.

Done. And I am really happy that most of the planned models don't have these... Everything done so far has been a piece of cake comparing to this. These 18 threads will appear in my nightmares for some time...

The 5'' turrets can be weathered and placed now.
