WV has been stripped down to her hull. Now I can start replicating the torpedo damage on the hull. Very little of the damage can be seen from above the waterline but the damage between frames 62 and 84 was quite substantial. The top of the hull between these frames was completely blown away and left a huge void. The casemates and boat deck subsequently sagged down into this voided space.
Here you can see the void at about frame 84.

And the sagging at the other end at frame 62.

Here are a couple of pics of the first step in replicating the damage.

Now I have to figure out how to get the casemates and boat deck to sag down.

Oh my, that is indeed a very brave step to make.

Unfortunately, it looks like you might have to lop off a section of the casemate deck and scratch-build the areas so affected by battle damage. Challenging, yes (like Marijn's capsized Amagi build), but less challenging than trying to melt part of a resin kit.

Yeah, I broke out in cold sweats as I was cutting the hull! No turning back now. I will definitely have to cut off the case mates and scratch build some new ones. More nervous cutting ahead!

Awesome! Thanks Martin! One thing that always puzzled me was what happened to her third Kingfisher. She had two on turret #3 and one on the deck when the attack started. In photo 80G32930, is that the charred remains of the third kingfisher on the deck between the mainmast and turret #3? I see a trolly there and maybe a wing?

Hi Jeff: I think you are correct in your assessment of the photograph. I scoped it out and did see what appeared to bethe remains of a trolley as it has all the hallmarks of the trolley that the Kingfisher were on. It is a mess, but once I saw the trolley I could make out other remains of the aircraft.

This is coming along nicely, a very unique display.

Working on the #3 turret and replicating the destroyed Kingfisher on the turret top. It is amazing that this bird managed to stay on the turret top after first surviving a port list of about 45 degrees, then a direct bomb hit.

Someone once said "sometimes things get uglier before they get better". This is definitely one of those instances! Here's a couple of pics of my initial attempt to show the sag in the deck and casemates.

Here is a look a little further along. I need to reconstruct casemate #2 and open up all the others.

After a LONG break from modeling, I am now back at it and jumping back into this project. Sorry for all the blocked images of my prior posts from the crooks that call themselves Photobucket. I don't know if I'll repost those images.
With the release of the printed cage masts I'm inspired again to finish this one.
Still much to do on both Battleships but I've spent the last week working on Hoga, YG-17, and now Tern.
Things are still not very pretty to look at but I'm hoping it will soon.

Amen to photobucket crooks
they have ruined so many good build threads here at MW.com

meanwhile....

That looks very good.!! :thumbs_up_1:

The contrast of the pristine stb side and the damaged port side
on blue water tainted with oil and debris will make a striking tribute to that tragic day

Great stuff, Jeff. Those 3D printed cage masts really look great. Just need the forward one's to be released...
