It has been a very long time since I've built a ship, a year I think. I'm over due. So here is the beginnings of another modern carrier. I fought with the idea of back dating her but I just like the modern ships and I want to keep her as her last cruise config. I have the KA Models detail set and I think they didn't miss an area of the ship, so much detail. I have a case on order from Grandpa's Cabinets so I begin with the island. I do not like the clear bridge. A big thumbs down. Nothing I can't live with. I plan on the usual lighting, including the subtle bridge light, so modification was made to accommodate the LED. This will go slow at first as I have a couple commission builds to get out, then things will pick up. Moving on.....

Great start. Looks like I will be the only one back dating Connie.

Still not much to see but wanted to keep the thread alive. Boring parts of building up the hull. I also marked the boot line. Going back and forth on a full hull or waterline. Looks like it will be full hull. Anyway. Moving on...

Nice Start. It looks a lot like the Forestall class, except for the location of the superstructure.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I received my 3D parts from Shapeway. I never thought I'd do this instead of scratch building another set but after two carriers, I think someone else can bear some of the burden. They look pretty nice, gave them a coat of light primer and BAM, they look amazing. Compared them to Ray's references and they are spot on.

You got a good start going on there James, you know I'm following this on closely, those 3-D parts look great, I had thought about getting them but I want to do as much scratch building as I can on this just to help improve my scratch skills, and believe me I need to improve since I have not done much in a while.

Again looking good my friend.

James- Like everyone else said great looking 3d printed parts! There is good reason why they match well with Ray's reference discs. Ray's pictures were instrumental in the design of these (and many other) parts that I've designed on Shapeways. Anyway, Would you mind if I took your pictures and used them on their Shapeways page?

Looking forward to following your progress on your build!

Most of the hull is assembled. This is as far as I am going until the hull is painted and mounted on temporary base and then all the finely bits and PE will be added but before that the hangar bays will have to completed. Hopefully more exciting things will happen soon. Moving on...

Thanks for looking. Wow, what a fantastic kit and a welcome change trying to make a presentable Nimitz class ship from that effort Trumpeter put out years ago. I chose not to back date the Kitty Hawk because I plan on doing a NAM JFK after Kitty. Very little if anything needs to be done to make this a very accurate modern era Kitty Hawk. Now, on to the hangar bay phase. I wish I had more reference material, these hangar bays will be like building a jig saw puzzle blind folded. But, thanks for the kind words thus far.

Thanks Doug. Well, the hull is painted so it's on to planning and building the hangar bays.

I'm still considering a waterline ship. This is just a test with some styro foam board. This stuff is just too brittle, need to find a better type foam board.

Looking good so far. How are you enjoying the kit itself?

There is a type of foam board that is not styrofoam (more like plastic with similar density to styrofoam) that I cannot think of the name of right off hand, but it is frequently used to pack electronics. it has it's own issues but might be a good substitute if you do not like the foam board. Or you can us artists acrylic medium gel to coat the board to create the waves. This will keep it from breaking off and getting all over your model.

James I can settle your thoughts on waterline or not.......................Keep KITTY HAWK full hull and get another kit of KITTY HAWK and make it the CONNY and waterline her..................PROBLEM SOLVED :heh: :heh: :heh: :heh:

Also, what is the brand of paints you used on your hull, the red looks spot on for the anti fouling red, or at least the photos give that impression, it really does look great and the finish is smooth, your so far ahead of me and my build it's not fare  Keep up the fantastic work buddy.
