Hello!

After finishing Warspite a new target is needed. Well a small ship this time, I hope it won't take another 17years

I always liked Hunt class destroyers - really pretty little ships with interestnig war history. First candidate was a type I, but the only kit is from WSW which is unfortunately too wide, has too much freeboard and the superstructure has a completely wrong shape.
HP Models type II has good dimensions, quite fine detalis altough lots of scratchbuilding will be applied here too.

At first glance it seems that plenty of information is available but no piece of this huge heap contains a detailed mutiple-view drawing of a type II... Any help is truly appreciated. Anyway the photographic material is good.

The exact ship chosen is HMS Chiddingfold - good data is available on her camo pattern but the sound of the name played no small part in the decision.

The upgrade sets are together so I will start soon!

I am looking forward to following this build - and, being a friend of Greg's I have the privilege to see HMS Chiddingfold unfold in flesh!

Well, what seemed a quick, straightforward build turned out to be something completely different...

First of all after I applied the base coat it revealed that this model is actually made of cheese...
Attachment:
Cheese.jpeg
Cheese.jpeg [ 25.21 KiB | Viewed 2932 times ]

those tiny bubbles are quite embarrassing and needed huge amounts of filling and sanding and the portholes were inevitably filled too and had to be re-drilled...

and the next thing: all the parts are cast in a thick layer of resin which is quite hard to remove especially if one wants flat even
surfaces
Attachment:
part.jpeg
part.jpeg [ 175.22 KiB | Viewed 2932 times ]

nevertheless the bulwarks aer quite thin and fragile and I managed to damage some parts during the sanding process so they were repaired using plastic strip

Because this is a generic Hunt class type II kit the searchlight platform/auxiliary control position provided had a different shape than the one in HMS Chiddingfold so some scratchbuilding was needed based on photos and the drawing in the Friedman book

so this is a much more demanding work than I anticipated

Hunts are my favourite ships, and we seem to have the same bibliography... UnfortunateLy I build in 1/350 and the lack of a buildable kit in that scale continues to vex me: over 80 ships in varied camouflage, in several allied navies, with wonderful histories, well documented, should have a decent market. Instead, all we have is the old ISW kit, which is the only kit I have been unable to complete!
I won't even discuss the complete lack of a Hunt III... Apologies for the rant, but this has been a sore point for a very long time!
I wish you luck and I will follow your build with interest

Hello Anthony!

It's good to have another Hunt enthusiast here!
You never build anything in 1/700? Because some quite nice Hunts are available, for example:
http://www.ibgmodels.com/70004.htm

Unfortunately I didn't have much time for building lately but in a few days I hope I will, so new pictures will be posted!

Hello folks,

there was a small pause but afterwards some progress was made.
The camouflage was airbrushed onto the hull and the bridge, and compass platform got its
wind deflector as well.

The hull colours are complete, the steel decks' MS2 is yet to arrive

HMS Chiddingfold is back again :wave_1:

Even I was quite susprised, that my last post was written almost 1year ago...
In the meantime I was occupied mostly with the seascape which was not always an easy task for me
I had really good instructions from Marijn van Gils at last year's Moson Model Show but naturally in practice it was a process of trial and error. Certain parts were redone more than once.

But finally the little destroyer was launched and the final fitting out has begun

What a lovely little ship this is! The seascape is really convincing too. Can't wait to see it with all the tiny details added.

A few parts were added again (bridge instruments, boat davits, carley floats, etc) first of all canvas covers for the 4in gun mountings made from cigarette paper. I had to cover the seascape with masking tape to protect it from matt varnish.

Very nice progress, really subtle detailing and weathering.
This model is smaller than one might think - maybe you could add a picture or two with a pen or a lighter next to the ship to help people realize its true dimensions.

The most unimpressive thread is back :jump_1:
But it won't be long, the little destroyer is finally ready. It was a fun build with only a few difficult moments and HP really created a good starting point.

I saw this model at the Moson show this weekend, and there is nothing unimpressive about it.
Excellent detailing, seascape, and painting! A beautiful and very finely finished model! Congrats!

Hello Marijn,

thanks for your kind words! It was great show and in company with the Amagi and the other wonderful ships it was easy to feel this one small but not in a bad way nevertheless!

Greg,
all the hard work has come to fruition with the Gold Medal you won with this little gem at Mosonshow last weekend!
Admit it, you hadn't expected such a feat among so many excellent (and mostly much bigger) ship models.
Now on to the next great project, my friend!

Ahoi Greg!

lots s of work....

have you considered cannibalising this little resin kit ?

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... eview.html

might get you a fair starting point on some of the parts

A bit late to the party here, but HMS Chiddingfold is a nice clear example of one of the standard designs published in Confidential Admiralty Fleet Order 679/42 "Camouflage of Small Ships at Sea" in use:
