Hello all, It has been long time since I posted something here - please take a look at my latest work. The subject is the rather less-known Walther U-boat type XVII released quite recently by Ukrainian MicroMir. The inbox is here, I may add that the kit is a quite good representation of plans published in B+G Vom Original zum Modell book. Quite recently the Start Verlag has published a few very good quality pics of U-1407 in U-Boot im Focus Edition No 12 which allowed for further detalling. This is how the hull looks after the basic assembly. I added the propeller shaft socket as well as mount for the horizontal planes (both from brass tubing). I prepared a few details for photoetching: (at the beginning I just wanted to use dark wash in the kits's limber holes but then I have found that the bow holes were see-through the hull...) The inlets and outlets of the Walther engine cooling system: TBC. Regards, Marek |

During the next installment more PE was applied to the hull. A general view: The external covers of rubber peroxide tanks were placed over the panels scribed originally in the kit. In the Uboot_im_Focus book I have found circular outlets with louvres (one on each side): At the beginning I thougth I wil simply use black wash over the kit's imitations of limber holes but it was not meant to be . The rows of tiny holes just under the deck will be simulated by black decal. Moving to the stern I thought that the kit's details were not as sharp as I would like them to be. The pipe-like tips of rudders' drives fairings were quite interesting in the original boat. End tips of the horizontal planes were wooden - I tried to replicate the wood pattern in PE parts. The rudders themselves will be brass too. Photoetched propeller blades were taken from kit's original fret and got slightly bent. The kiosque got its share of brass too. Kit's original railings were a bit on the thick side so I replaced them. The doors and hatches covers are made of 0.05 mm brass etched down to 0.025 mm thickness. Hope they will not look too heavy after painting. There is still a few details missing both from the hull and from the kiosque - they are waiting for etching and for the next installment. TBC |

Thank you! Yes, the brass parts are designed by me and etched at one of the commercial services. Regards, Marek |

Back at the boat. The bow has been updated with the torpedo doors and a few other details. The kiosque has been updated as well - I have added navigation lamps, safety ring (noticed on photographs in Uboat im Focus book) and a mounting point for the binoculars. One more installment with periscope/antennaes and onto the painting booth! |
