This has been on the go now for 4 years, a minute here a few hours there. I wanted to pay particular attention to the way light passes through and make sure it was close to accurate. Internal bulkheads installed, skylites opened, down hatches opened-laddered to installed lower decks, hawsepipes installed, portholes resized, and most of the suggestions from the official Hood site preformed.

Wow! Very impressive, both from a build stand point as well as from a research stand point. Not to mention that patience to put 4 years in on a single build. I lack both the talent/ability and the patience to come close to what you have done with "good 'ole 'Ood". I can't wait to see some update photos.

Get ready for the compliments to flood in!

Bob

Thank you for your kind words. As this is my first attempt to detail a model, it came at twice the price. That is, I built one before this to a point a little further along but stopped due to many inexperienced and unfixable errors. The process revealed a more efficient, solid and accurate build with the kit in hand. And two years ago, my first son was born so time was reallocated by my CO. haha...ha. Some other mods: I found some brass tubes and resized the bollards, all of the superstructure windows (ie,conning tower, spotting top, etc) were cleared all the way through with floors and walls added, engine room vents built right through the boat deck to give proper depth appearance after paint, offices including the CPO's built and lit by skylite, internal reflectors bounce light to highlight darkened rooms 'appropriately'... phew...that is all, now it's just finish as is. I do have earlier build shots, but I'm sure nothing any modeler here hasn't seen or done. However, the hawsepipes were a tricky task..styrene tube cut to some crazy angles and curves, finished with filler. Used plasticene to hold it in place while fitting them out. That might be worth a look. I'll see if I can get that. KK, thats enough outta me. Thanks again for your compliments.

Sounds like you went/are going all out! Would love to see some shots of the interior work - that's not something we see very often.

The interior work is fairly simplistic, it was more built for function as one would need a microscopic camera to see within (esp @ 1:350). The effect that will have been created might even slip by those whom have built this kit as well. I just didn't like the way the I could see all the way through the hull through the portholes and then decided to continue the process with the rest of the boat. I shall dig up the build shots as best I can for you though. At the moment I've hit a stop until I can get my hands on the Eduard PE set...anyone got one for sale?

Some views of interior reworking. 4. Not much to look at but when the boat deck in is place the lower deck portholes/hatches light up naturally. Use of styrene and gloss white paint as light reflectors. 5. The two down hatches complete with lower deck, ladder and water tight collar. The floating styrene is a light baffle for the port holes aft. 6. One can see the openings for the engine room vents in the top right corner, just for paint relief and depth.

Finally figured out which PE kit to use for the degaussing cable... strip styrene. Didn't even know this stuff existed... .015x.040" and .015x.020". Easier to work with, more of it and 1/1000 the cost with better results... in my opinion... Guess we'll see when I'm done, knock on wood. Wish me luck. :woo_hoo:

Degaussing cable update, two different widths fore and aft. After the glue soaked into the cables on the anchor plate additions, the cables became easier to move and stretch into location... a little trial and error on the timing though.

only a few more ladders and short railings and then it's time for the real challenges... the funnel grates and all long raillings.

Hope you can find something helpful, half the scale will be quite the challenge to get some of the mods to work... good luck to you!!

Thank you for the compliment Jim.

I like that build, looks like something that took a lot more skill than I currently have.

I've been making decisions/concessions based on scale and time-value. I hope it will achieve the proper scale detailing and lighting I am going for. These days making time for anything is dicey at best... gonna have to fall back on the a couple of minutes here and there gameplan. Maybe for now I shall take some more closeups if anyone wants to see 'em.

At early stages of painting and checking for obvious flaws, photoetch wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

I'd really like to be able to complete this one (as I shelved my first attempt), any questions or comments are welcome. My main concern now is finishing the decks with weathering consistent with her last days and not messing up too much with all of the protrusions like vents or barbettes etc.

She looks good so far, though I must admit I'm somewhat at a loss as to what kind of effect you're going for with the airbrushed black!

Will we see her at the Alberta Military Modellers Show on Sept. 14 at The Military Museums in Calgary?

Perhaps she be there, but with regards to the black (just preshading)... I paint in thin layers and build up depth that way. Above the waterline she was painted by sailors hanging from scaffolding in certain lengths which means they didn't get an exactly even tone across the hull ( I am still going to paint her over again with medium grey). Since she'll be displayed on blocks, I wanted the effect of water still running off her and usually from the photos Ive seen this leaves darker shiny streaks with flat areas where its already dry. There's a beautiful job I saw that made my mouth water, an oil tanker which I thought the builder sprayed prior to display. Then he told me the trick.

She's not going to make the show... I put a nail through my finger today. Besides that, there's still too much work and not enough time at this rate.
