The Island is getting along nicely. Waiting for the masts to dry properly, then finish the rigging.
The catwalk along the funnel is a nightmare, I can't fit it at the place where it should be. Still trying to figure that one out.

Question: about airplane colour.
As stated earlier, painting is one of my weak spots. I currently only work with standard colours. No airbrush.

Sofar, I´ve painted all US aircraft ( 1942 era ) with these colours : Humbrol 109 ( WWI blue ), Humbrol 147 Light Grey.
It´s kind of OK, but it´s not 100%.

This is what I´m trying to get, a slightly lighter, greyer tone :

Image

I´ve tried several ´blue grey´ colours, but they all turn out more dark grey or even greenish. For instance, I bought the Airfix Wildcat kit just because it had the paint included, and the instruction told me to use Humbrol Acrylic 164. But this turned out more green/grey than blue ... I´ve even tried Lifecolour Seablue 5-S but I just see a greenish colour. And I´m not colourblind.

Does anyone know the right blue(grey) colour ( preferrably with make/number ) for these aircraft ? Something I can buy off the shelve ... Thanks.

I'm building Scott McCusky's Wildcat at Midway, currently. The closest I've found, out of the bottle, is the Model Master Acryl US Navy blue gray. I'll take a look at the bottle this evening and see what the actual product number is.

Great, look forward to seeing that. Thanks for looking in advance.

This is the difference I mean. Left is the 1/350 Wildcat with Humbrol 109, which is kind of OK, and right is the Airfix Wildcat with Humbrol Acrylic 164, which Airfix states I should use.
Just doesn't look right ...

The Humbrol 109 in the photo you posted isn't that far off, actually. I agree that the 164 is way too gray.

The Testor's Model Master Acryl paint is "US Navy Blue Gray M-85" and is their product number 4847. I'm not convinced it's blue enough for a factory finish, but out of the bottle it does give a nice slightly weathered result.

I have a Tamiya Corsair that I painted with it, but bear in mind I wanted a faded bird so I cut the blue gray with 20% white to lighten it: http://devinjpoore.com/models/f4u1/index.htm

Thanks. Will try that one, although not on this build. Fot the small 1/350, it won't make too much difference.

But I'm planning to do a few proper airplane models as well, and for that I need to have the colour spot on.

Where would we be without clothes pegs ?

For those who like a challenge, the Dutch word for clothes peg = wasknijper

The on-deck airwing is coming along nicely. I've seen examples of people who make little masterpieces out of this scale, with photo-etch and all, keeps amazing me.

Managed to finally marriage the deck and the island.

Funny to see there should be 3 windows instead of 4 at the bridge.

For the rigging I've used as many photo's as I could find. The little pointy loose ends of the rigging will be cut away.

The build is progressing very well. I keep admiring these Infini sets but as yet haven't acquired the Merit kit! One day ...

As for the US Navy 1942 colours, these will do the trick:

Thanks for all the hints and tips. I'm somewhat finished, few small details to go like the elevator barrier but have to source that first.
It is allmost straight out of the box, I cheated a bit with a couple of photo-etch leftovers from the Hornet/Enterprise kit.

USS Yorktown CV-5.

Hi Arno, I enjoyed your post of the Yorktown build. Very nicely done. I am currently building the same Merit kit. Can't say that I'm overly impressed with what Merit has done... some good and some bad. I have a question. Where did you find the picture of the mural that was located in the Hanger Deck. I have decided to copy what you have done for the fun of it. Did you find the original picture in a book? Best regards, Dennis

Sorry, I only saw your post now. I´m going to start my Yorktown 1/200 model soon, so started looking for references again.

So in case you´re still looking for this information, I made the mural myself using all the pictures I could find. My source was the book Legends of Warfare USS Yorktown CV-5 by David Boyle.

I decided to make a better version of it as the scale of my coming build was going to be bigger, and then I found out someone had already beaten me to it :
