I am working on the Aoshima 1/700 Wasp and I want to portray her right at the moment of her loss on September 15, 1942. I want to model her making her turn to starboard right as the first torpedo impacts her. My goal is to complete her by September if possible. So far I have the kit, the Wasp PE set, 3D Modelparts 5 inchers, 1.1's, 20 mm's, and .50 cals. I have the hull assembled and began adding the details to the bow and stern. I will be tossing out some questions regarding techniques for certain things and other stuff as I go and I appreciate any input provided. Thanks for looking.

Got pics of her port side as well? I'm tempted to buy the Aoshima kit as well despite the concerns on other threads about it being underscale.

It certainly costs much less than Corsair Armada's version!

I can't comment on if it is underscale or not. It looks ok to me but I haven't dug that deep into it. I will post some pics of the other side for you to eyeball. So far it seems to go together clean with minimal seams and no fit issues.

Question for anyone with Wasp info out there: Would the side elevator have been deployed or stowed at the time of her loss? She was in the process of recovering aircraft but I don't know about the elevator. Anyone?

Thanks, Mike.

Got a little more done the last couple days. The 5 inch gun decks are mounted and the flight deck is primed and got a coat of wood paint. I finished painting the flight deck with USN Flight Deck Blue last night but it was wet so I didn't get a pic of that yet. Hope to start adding some of the PE to the hull areas over the next couple days.

Got the catwalks and gun decks all added to the hull today. I also removed all of the cast on stairs and such from the hull to prepare for the PE replacements. Flight deck is painted and ready for some detailing which I hope to get done this weekend.

Haven't gotten much done this week and no pics. I got the rest of the molded on detail removed and cleaned up on the hull and under the flight deck. I hope to start getting the PE done on these areas this weekend. Should have more pics soon.

I did some work on the PE for the forward part of the flight deck and also put a coat of primer on the hull. I hope to get the hull painted in the next few days and then on to some more flight deck detailing and island work.

Been out of town again but got some work done last night. Underside of the flight deck has been airbrushed and I got the rest of the PE work done on the bow and stern areas. Should get more done tonight and have some updated pics tomorrow.

Hello Mike,

You are making some good progress and am waiting to see it when the deck is installed. What PE set are you using?

Scott

Hi Scott. Got some of the 3D Modelparts 20's and .50's installed on the bow and stern the other day. I did a little more touch up work and should have the flight deck on tomorrow. The PE set is an Aoshima Wasp set. The set is pretty comprehensive and the instructions are very good for it. I will try to grab a couple pics of the instructions. Mike.

Got the flight deck mounted today. Also put a couple of F4F's down on the hanger deck near the bow. Need to do some touch up work around the edges of the flight deck where it joins the hull but that won't take long. Also started on the island today.

Got some work done on the island over the last couple days. Got the island itself mostly assembled, added the directors, PE vertical ladders, base coat of paint, and some of the camo done on it. Need to do some paint touch up tomorrow and then hope to get most of the PE done on it this weekend.
