Hi there everyone, it's been well over a year since I posted the last update on the Askold project. I had to postpone the entire work on this cruiser after I accidentally destroyed parts of her while moving some stuff around, also the cruiser was missing certain parts which cannot be easily replaced with scratch made or aftermarket parts.
Well the good thing is I've finally aquired some missing parts for the cruiser and determined to finish building no matter how dreadful the working progress would be.
The cruiser was placed on top of a cabinet in my basement and was left untouched and uncovered till quite recently. Months of exposure to damp air has cause some glue fail and a thick layer of sticky dust has accumulated on the cruiser, and the first ardous task was to remove it. Some dust became so adherent to the deck, the airbrush became useless. I had to use the smallest brush pen to sweep them all.
Here is how she looked right after the cleaning and repairing was done.

All the 152mm canet guns were fitted to the deck. The cruiser carried three steam launches, I replaced the missing one on the starboard side with a very large whaleboat, which looks fine to me.
The rear mast has been completely remade in order to improve accuracy, Also I added a pair of conical rudder signals, normally used by german warships. Since Askold was built in Germany, she also carried a prominent set of these signals on her rear mast(Evidence of these could be seen in nearly all photos of Askold). Another typical German feature would be her three-screw propulsion design.

Hi there guys, here's another small update on the ship. This weekend's effort proves to be quite fruitful. Below is the detailed progress on the ship:
1. Stern deck railings finished
2. The red&green helm signal hung on the mast gaff has been relocated to a much lower position(the original position of the signal was placed way too high by examing some Askold photos)
3.A scratch-made weather cover frame has been added to the white access hatch next to the stern 152mm cannon(the hatch location was incorrect and way too close to the main gun, the weather cover is,in fact interfering with the gun barrel. I'll try to address this problem later)
4.A custom ordered a plaque for the Askold with basic information of the ship inscribed on it.
5.There're two whistles along with their steam inlet pipes installed on the No.4 and No.5 funnel. This detail has been added to the corresponding funnels on the model. Also added are three circular shaped railings on the second, fourth and fifth funnel.(horizonal control lines will be added while adding funnel stays afterwards )
6.Battle ensign has been hoisted on the rear mast gaff(the flag itself is a bit thick though, due to the tin foil inserted between the decals)
7.Guy wire for the rear mast derrick, rear mast stays, bracings and halyards for the signal flags have been added, the rear mast looks more completed right now.

Post subject:  Re: Combrig's 1/350 five-funnel cruiser Askold building upda

Guys, there're two questions which I hope someone can help me with it. I have a set of decal flags offered by combrig. The set includes two Russian royal standards(yellow background with a black Russian coat of arm in the center ). Considering the fact that Askold is one of the Tsar's(Nicholas II) favorite ships, I plan to depict the cruiser in a royal visit scene. Natually the Tsar's standard will be hoisted on the Askold once he is aboard. The problem is I could not find any articles suggesting how and where a royal standard should be flown, namely, where exactly should the standard be hoisted, halyard on the main mast yard? Or masthead?
Another question would be is it possible for a warship to not dress overall when receiving a royal visit? I intend to make the cruiser fly her battle ensign and masttop guard ensign only, as if she had just returned from combat waters, upon hearing the news that the Tsar will be visiting the ship shortly, she hastily put out a royal banner without dressing the ship. I was wondering if this senario actually happened or can be accepted in real life? Hope someone can help me with it.
