Oh and thank you very much! :thumbs_up_1:

An extra photograph that should have been in the previous set.

The next installment will be soon.

It seems that Postimage.org is temporarily undergoing some maintenance or something.

All links are turning up blank for now. I hope they fix it before too long.

Edit: It seems that the pictures are all still there, it is just that for some reason the site is deemed 'unsecure' and they require a manual override to see. Not certain what this indicates.

Edit #2: And just like that, the crises passes. Everything seems normal again.

Onwards to the deck!

I dislike using aftermarket wooden decks. They can look very nice at times but I find the sudden elevation change to be a bit much. And beside it is so much fun to paint a wooden deck!

I have a process that I like to use and I will try to document it better next time. Since I was under a time crunch and the deck is so large I decided to do a quick and dirty (literally) solution.

The formula is : dark brown -> protective sealant -> penciling in planks with either a set of colors or a number 2 -> lighter brown or deck tan top coat unevenly applied -> sealant -> dark enamel pin washes -> cleanup with thinner and cure -> sealant -> general oil wash of varied colors and let dry -> flat sealant coat -> enjoy!

Now, I didn't follow my own rules. I have never painted a deck this large so I did some experimenting.

I actually did the penciling twice (unnecessarily). I want to see what a reasonable pattern would look like. I already decided to only use one color to save time. I would recommend using three shades (a cooler version of the top coat, a dark, and a warmer tone) on top of the bottom coat to achieve a good effect. Additionally it is crucial to keep the pencil points sharp! Otherwise it starts to lose crispness and the effect is lost. I try to sharpen them every dozen or so strokes.

Here is some of the test pattern (which I almost completely managed to hide):

Image

Image

Here is the dark undercoat, in this case a Vallejo brown (yes you can use up those seemingly infinite squeeze bottles.)

Image

And the finished basecoat effect:

There will be more and better images of the deck as we move on to the superstructure and weaponry.

I think it would have been better if I had spent the few more hours to use proper colored pencils but the time was so crucial.

It would have been best if I had spent the time and carefully masked the planks and done a proper decoration job with four tones in the airbrush but that would have added several workdays to achieve. Perhaps next time.

The deck does not look like much now, but just wait until we release an oil spill!

Onwards and upwards! Literally. The superstructure.

Everything I basecoated in black for the next phase.

Image

Not pictured is the usual white countershading.

The airbrushing of the superstructure was a tricky task. Considerably harder to use the same method as for the hull. So I cut paper masks and held them up against the components and hoped for the best. There was some considerable touchup with paintbrushes. The result was not as subtle as I hoped it might but it is very serviceable.

I also, very carefully (I wanted my boats to turn out better than on my Roma) painted my deck regatta and made tie down straps for them which will appear shortly:

Sorry buddy, but it seems that the problems you were talking about earlier are still in effect; all I'm seeing is "Image" where the photos should be.

Which sucks, because I always find your work to be quite well done and beautiful.

I made very few photographs of the detail painting but here I am in the dark picking out the deck details:

Image

And the finished product blurred to the maximum:

Image

I also painted up the anti-aircraft armament, no pictures of most of them but here is a Pom-Pom:

Image

The kit provides two 'Stringbags'. I will only mount one. The extra gets its own pedestal.

Mixed emotions. On the one hand, I like the compliment  on the other, not so much. :Mad_6:

My response:

You are correct it seems. I just tried using both my phone and two different browsers, no dice!

I am not sure why it's working on my Chrome...

Edit: The pictures are slowly reappearing on my other machines and browsers. I am curious to know what my followers are seeing...

Here is some weathering before tidying up.

I will try to take more detailed pictures next time but the time crunch was such that I just shot straight through.

Here is the beginnings of the pinwash, don't worry, I straightened the railings and the stanchions (which broke) afterwards:

I've discovered that I am very partial to using oil paints to drybrush.

Here are some photographs of the superstructure during and after its weathering process:

My camera rather struggles with indoor lighting but I am getting a new one very soon.

This is Rodney's permanent berth:

Thank you Dan!

Yes, Lucullus is my trusty steed. Just please don't look closely at the paint. I assure you that mechanically it is in exceptional order for three decades on the road. One of these days I am going to refinish it.......

I will say that using the Benz as a base displays how large one of these models can get.

I have a Heller Soleil Royal waiting in the wings to go tall where this is long. Of course, I must find my inner dafi to start that! :joker:
