Hello gents! :wave_1:

I'm back with my new project. This time I'll go back to some WW2 stuff instead.
I haven't recieved the kit yet but the pontos set arrived and boy there's a lot of stuff! :thumbs_up_1:

This time the build will be most likely a lot slower and more in detail than my previous one
so back to turtle mode! :cool_1:

I'll probably get the kit in a few weeks but there's plenty of do with the etches before that.
Here's my first few hours of building one of the pom poms.

That's it for now and hope you enjoy the ride!

Nice etch work!

So, is your Prince going to be from the Bismarck encounter or as part of Force Z? If the latter is the case, how do you plan to do the camouflage? I'd give...well, not an arm, but maybe a pinky finger, for a precut masking set...

I'm making her as the Force Z.

I ordered the Gator precut mask set but it was sold out so I have no idea if I'm able to get it. (WEM says they will get it in 3 weeks so let's hope for the best!)
If not then I'll try to enlarge the pattern and copy it to tape masks or something like that, but I'm sure it'll be a PITA anyway but my body is ready!

If someone can help with the AA guns a bit. Am I correct that after the 41 refits the B turret had a 8 barrel pompom fitted and a 4 barrel on on the C turret replacing the UP launchers?
Also 7 20mms were added but where? Any AA placement charts , drafts or something for their placement anywhere? All other info is also apreciated!

You are correct on the pompoms; Y-turret had a quad fitted. The 20mms were placed as follows: one pair on each side on the first accesible deck level on the superstructure and three on the quarterdeck, all in tubs (Fitted November 1941 while she was in Capetown). She also carried a single 40mm bofors Mk III mount on her quarterdeck (one of those).

Thanks EJ!

I know there's been a lot of debate on the camo colors. I've read the whole 12 pages here on modelwarship.com and here's my take on them.
I'll probably tweak some of the colors but I kinda like them.

I'll also do some salt weathering for the antifouling red to bring it a bit more to life. And to follow a trend of trying new techiques on each new build.

Having seen your Soverenny in development, this'll definitely be an interesting build—in a dead-heat competition with Chris Flodberg, maybe?

I like the color choices, too.

Here's my progress for the day. Took me about 3 hours to assebly the main mast.
A lot of patience and try fitting is needed to get everything to line up. It's not 100% perfect
but good enough I guess. I attach the support legs once I get to dry fit it to the superstructure.

I'll be posting most of the pics in highres from now on so just click the pics!

Cheers Bosco!

I'm sure the camo pattern will keep me on my toes so I hope I'll be able to pull it off nicely as that will be biggest stepping stone for sure on this build.

Indeed a nice mast! I do notice that Pontos made an error in the early-warning radar; thats a type 279 that was never fitted to HMS Prince of Wales. She carried the prototype type 281 with a separate receiver (aft mast) and transmitter (foward mast) . The visual difference between the receiver and transmitter array are extremely small , but both are unlike the type 279. You can consider leaving this aerial.. However, the small type 243 on top of the type 279 didn't go to sea after HMS Prince of Wales was sunk, so you actually need to cut it off....

Unfortunately they are the wrong radars. I tried to look for some after market sets but couldn't find any that would only provide radars. If someone knows if someone makes them let me know.
For now I'll just have to live with them unless I can get the type 281s from somewhere.

Here's some more work on the cranes!

Image

Image

And here's the most definity flaw of the pontos set. The instructions.

On the crane assembly the pictures are so tiny , even smaller than the parts in real life, that you can't make anything out of them. All the folds you just have to figure them out
by looking at the, thank god , reliefes etched at the bends. Also there are parts called out on the exploded view that are never called out during the assembly. Also looking
at the finished pictures they are missing. Also the little box under the crane platform collided with the crane if put where the instructions showed it so I moved it further in.
And the little wheel section in the middle of the crane didn't fit unless I cut the support beams and slided the thing in. I was on the verge of a breakdown while assemblying this
and it really end up more like a big brass block with some glue on haha :heh:

Well atleast I'll be wiser on the next crane.
