Started this while sub while repairing the Hiye. The I-365 was a D class IJN transport sub. Most were used as Katien mother ships, but the I-365 remained a transport sub during her short career. I believe only the first one of the class had a pair torpedo tubes.

ImageHull
Hull builds up very nicely.

ImageBollards
Only mods to the hull were the bollard and added some brass propeller shafts. There is some PE from the small PE kit on the bow.

Pre
This my first attempt at pre-shading…. I moved away from the Tamiya spray primer and went with Mr Finisher Gray 1500 and Black 1500 for the pre-shading.

Painted
Painted with Sovereign ColourCoat INJ Hull Red and Yokosuka Grey.

Light wash applied. Then Alclad Light Sheen clear coat.

Image2018-12-13_02-19-10
Artvox wood deck applied. The Aoshima detail set comes with the wood deck, but the Artvox seemed better defined and has the deck for the landing craft that is included in the kit.

Maybe the cargo deck? I guess the build options would be to leave open or use the supplied cover if you are going to piggy back the landing craft on it.

The basics of the conning tower. I felt the type 22 surface radar in the kit was unusable and used a Veteran's set with scratch build platform. The conning tower has a wood deck, so the guts were excluded till painting and the deck the is down.

Nice work. These are ugly - but kinda neat - little subs.

I dunno about neat, but definitely ugly.

Agreed, nice work.

I find that little metal turd endlessly fascinating—I'd never heard of transport subs before!

Good progress on what looks to be an excellent model.

Defiantly, a quirky sub, but a fun project.

Good shot of the conning tower.

ImageConning
Just substituted the kit's binoculars with Veteran's set. The detail kit included PE for Type 13 early warning radar and loop antenna. The PE for the port side flag tarp was too long and to be cut down to match the picture. I don't think the flag decals fit either of the modified or the unmodified one and had to use a different set. The ship's ID decals fit fine, but needed a ton of Mirco Sol.

Image2018-12-19_06-06-16
Tried to get rid the El Camino look with the cover. I would not put in the wood cargo deck if the cover is going to be used as it caused some fit issues.

Image2018-12-19_06-07-13
I believe the landing craft is suppose to be a Type H Landing Barge. Added a PE landing ramp and a few other details from IJN PE small boat set.

Profile... Still needs armament, rigging, and a few deck items.

Hull red looks spot on.

Thanks.

All the pieces on... Redid the mast and periscope (?) with some tapered brass rod. All periscope and masts were painted white on Kaiten carriers and decided to do it on this one too.

Image2019-01-09_08-12-22
Gun barrel drilled and I just used the PE for the rigging.

Image2019-01-09_08-03-20
Best I could get of the landing craft's rudder, prop, and attachment point.

Image2019-01-09_08-11-38
Veteran's 25mm singles and some of the deck detail. Still need to put some finishing touches and decide if I am going to weather her. Maybe some air recognition stipes and add a voice tube...

Very sharp looking.

She was operational only for about a month before being sunk, so I think light to moderate weathering would be fine. A couple of months before that were spent working up in home waters, where she would have been reasonably well maintained.

She looks great! If I didn't have 7,354 models in the stash already....

Great job! this is a VERY nice build and you gave your submarine a lot of character; I REALLY like it.

Thanks Joe, I would love to go to a show just to see the body of work, but would probably have to take Arlo the Great Dane. Since I moved to Maine a city like Boston might be in range. Also, is there a certain type of paint you are using for your Yamato? Can't imagine doing all the AA guns to your level or even the organization of such a project.

I am using WEM IJN line. IJN02 is the main color. Kure Naval Arsenal. I will also use their hull red and deck tan, also in the IJN line. The Kure color has a slight blue hint to it.
