Hi there Jamie and all,

Astonishing build. The painting on the turrets is a masterpiece, an ins priration for everybody else around, and looks like a 1/400-1/350, but man it is 1/700 !!!!

Keep the good work, and very best regards,

Willie.

Hi Willie, and thank you for the kind words. The painting isn't too great though, at least not in my opinion. I am terrible with a paint brush and avoid whenever possible. This is just too small to mask for airbrushing though :(

I have added those supports using brass rod.

I made a mistake which has been pointed out for me when I cut the plastic barrels giving an overall length that was slightly too long. There's nothing in the instructions to indicate where the plastic barrels should be cut. I really should have ignored all of that helpful point-out because what I've done was at very best very foolhardy and could easily have completely destroyed an expensive kit, but I removed the metal barrels again...

Image

...used a 1.5mm drill to drill back the stubs of the plastic barrels, and clean out the swarf with the tip of 10A scalpel blade taking extreme care to avoid shredding the surrounding turret

Image

...and refitted the barrels with overall length about 2mm shorter.

Image

I should be pleased with this but actually it's probably the most stupid thing I can remember attempting on a model for a very long time, with very little visible difference and a much greater risk of it going badly wrong than it going right.

Don't try that at home, boys and girls.

I fully agree. What you have won is little if compared with you could have lost, and probably the apparent difference was underlined by the gloss of the metal barrels vs. the painted turret. Once painted the thing would have been more than aceptable. Anyway you took the risk and won. Before, it was superb; now, it is perfect.

Congrats again,

Willie.

These are the Type 282 radar Yagi antenna pieces included in the basic kit. To be honest, these are superior to anything I've seen in injection moulded plastic in 1/350 so far:

Image

Nevertheless, the Flyhawk Delux Edition includes 2-piece PE replacements. These are brass bits I dread in 1/350...

Image

Image

There are nice PE ladders included in the Delux Edition too. These fold easily and fit the plastic parts perfectly (i.e. they neatly fit in the holes and reach the level below whilst inclined at the correct angle!)

Image

There is quite a lot of assembly high up around the bridge area. I have 2 more Type 282s to make for here, as well as a pair of Type 285s to assemble for the Mk.III HACS.

Parts are beginning to be recognisable as a KGV class though. I'm still very pleased with this kit and am enjoying it.

In an effort to avoid as much brush painting as I can I am airbrushing the hull. Here 507C has been applied, masked, and the MS3 applied next.

Last night and today was wasted in a futile effort to get air conditioning working before tomorrow morning, ultimately to be defeated by a poor quality part that doesn't do what it says on the tin. So that means my tolerance for people on the English motorways using lanes incorrectly will be approximately zero once I head south to that sticky, hot and close climate. Yuck.

Anyway, MS3 is masked and I opted to go for MS1 next as it's only a few shapes to mask over.

That will be all until I return next week.

I've been away for a few days, visiting first the RAF Museum at Hendon since I was close anyway, then to Salisbury Hall to visit the de Havilland Aircraft Museum where the curator had arranged access to both their Mosquito FB.VI and B.35 so I could get in about to gather details for some products I have in mind. I also went to the Flying Legends airshow at IWM Duxford for the weekend.

Now I'm home I've masked the MS1 on the hull and sprayed some 507A:

That looks great. Nice work on the masking.

Im thrilled you build this, it will show off the paints so well. One of these controversial schemes so done right will be great for the community.

I've just applied it controversially!

I need to make a few adjustments to the hull, which I shall plan to do by airbrush with brush painting (hawk, spit) as a fall-back. I have managed to get a few bits of the pattern misaligned with the upperworks. Probably the whole thing is a bit off, but I shall make do. I'm just not a very diligent modeller!

You're doing great man, keep it up. can't wait to see the final product. Most people wouldn't notice the misaligned stuff, but I know some have the knack for nitpicking in an offensive manner, which is just to be ignored then. :)

Time for a wee bit of progress on the Prince of Wales. I have realised that the Delux version included a PE radio direction finder (I think that's what it is - it's overshadowed by lots of discussion about fire director radar fits in all the books I have) so after thinking about the relative merits of leaving the plastic one in situ or replacing, I carefully sawed the plastic one off and made up the brass replacement. I've also fitted the supports for the Type 285 fire control radars which can be seen fitted atop the two Mk.III HACS (High Angle Control Stations). I need to assemble the Yagi antennae to fit on these mounts.

The Type 285s are assembled, and I have airbrushed a basecoat of NARN30 MS4 onto the two upper sections for the forward superstructure.
