Post subject:  OH NO!! not ANOTHER one!!! 1/200 HMS HOOD

Well, obviously it's Hood season LOL. I started this a year or so ago, and have been following all the builds here and blatantly stealing idea's, tips and suggestions from everybody. Plus added a couple of my own.
A rather amusing tale goes with this model. I bought it in York, England while on holiday visiting family. ( I live in Rhode Island, USA). Well, the hobby shop in Fossgate York, did a fantastic job of packing the kit for the trip, including a handle to carry it! All went well until I arrived in customs at the other side of the pond. I got hauled into the back office and quizzed about the package. Turned out the officers didn't care about me or my luggage, they just wanted to SEE THE MODEL!!!! We had to unpack it, show the parts, answer the questions (ALL modelling related!) the ships history, the battle with the Bismark, etc. what a great time! Those guys were really into it. One was ex Navy, another had a relative in the RN, and a bunch more came over and joined in. It was a blast, I don't look at customs officers as "the Enemy" any more, they are just regular guys doing their job, and very human. Great guys. I didn't miss my connecting flight, and when we were done they repacked it as good as before. What a laugh.
So, on with the build. I collected the kit, the Pontos kit, all the Eduard sets, the AOTS book, the HMS Hood Association Website. E J's model build and 'On the Slipway" site, and all the builds on this site and interweb photo's, also the thread that came about as Pontos was developing the set and interacting here and with the HMSHA. ( very informative for the mods needed to the kit).
Got to go and cook dinner, be back soon.

As usual, I started with the hull, and filled those excessive plate trenches with plastic sheet and smoothed over. Still got more smoothing and filling to do. That's a big hull. BTW, I love the photo of the kitty in the hull! lol. Ours just jumped in the boxes. Did you see the photo of Ginger? That's a seriously tough looking cat. Fishcakes looks quite mild compared. After the plates, I photocopied the porthole positions and scaled them and then printed to fit the model and filled the incorrect ones, drilled new ones in the right places. While at it, I went through all the kit parts and filled the oblique formed holes and drilled them square to the surface. Also while there I removed all the molding seams and ridges, and there are a LOT!. Next came the propeller bosses and supports, which were modified as we all do. First the bosses, attacked with the dremmel grinder. Before gluing in, I smoothed and streamlined the supports to remove the square edges and molding ridges, then glued the lot in using the metal prop shafts to keep everything aligned. The rudder came next, filling sink holes and smoothing. After that, the anchor hawse holes were modified, again as everyone else has, but using heat bent evergreen tubing to get the hole liners. As part of this process I modified the foredeck as per Pontos's insructions and made sure the new resin upper hawse holes would fit. BTW, make sure you check your Pontos kit instructions with the most current version on the Pontos website. Mine are different in a few area's as it is an early kit. LOL, after all this modifying, I am still in two minds whether to do a full hull or waterline! OK, time to serve out dinner, the pork ribs are about ready and I need to cook the sweet corn and baked potatoes. Back in a few.

Next came the decks, first cutting off the lumps and bumps as per the Pontos instructions. Then making sure they are level and true. This is important as the fit of the superstructure parts depends on a good true base. After the glue is dry, all seams and joins are blended and smoothed. At this point I put the hull aside for a while, to work on something a tad smaller, lol. I started with the conning tower parts as the plan view of the tower is too "fat" on the sides, it should be more of a slim egg shape. In theory it is a simple fix, just sand down the sides of part L1 to make them straighter as seen in the AOTS plans.
I copied the plans, scaled to the kit, cut out and pasted to the plastic. Well, this eliminated the step/overhang around the lower portion of the tower (on part L2) So what? easy enough to fix, just sand that down too. Not so fast there buddy. If we do that, then the new Pontos wood deck will have a huge gap at the base. So, after pondering the thought for a while, I cheated. I sanded the upper portion of the tower to match the new shape of part L1 and restore the overhang and flatter sides, while inducing a slight taper into the main body of the tower to retain the original kit shape at the base so that the Pontos deck will still fit neatly. All this required the inside of both kit parts to have a layer of filler on the inside to protect against sand-through. Use your favorite brand. After that surgery, I added the belt at the top from Evergreen strip. Next came the mods needed to L2. To start this part, refer to Greenglade's thread for a very complete and informative description of how to hollow out the area's under the quad gun mounts. Also refer to "On the slipway" for details in this area. Add thin triangular wall supports and tube gun mount supports underneath when done. Add the sliding door and rails to the face of the central portion. Make sure to smooth out any floor joins, as they will be seen. Add small triangular braces along the side railings/walls. Modify the rear as per Pontos's instructions. Then remove the incorrect kit wall from the rear underside. Add the interior walls and detail as per the AOTS plans and Greenglade. Don't forget the underdeck beams detail. OK, enough talking, lets see if I can figure out how to use Flickr and post some pictures. Regards, Pete in RI.

Post subject:  Re: OH NO!! not ANOTHER one!!! 1/200 HMS HOOD

Thanks Jabb, maybe. I just want to make as accurate a replica as I can and if EJ can scratch build it in 1/350th, i will give it as good a try as I can with a 1/200 kit to emulate the Master! My main issue is time, I don't have too much bench time so my builds go along at a geologic pace. I can feel the Atlantic widening, lol, in fact it probably grew by a half inch since I started this build. I have a bunch of photo's still to resize and post, but the progress they show is over a years worth, after they are up you will see a slow down in pictures. One of the reasons for my delay in posting this build is my complete idiocy with computers, it took me AGES to figure out how to post pictures on this site. That's wierd, as over on the Britmodeller site ( my other model trend is WW1 1/32 aircraft) I had no problems posting pics at all. Must be different site programs. it was only Darlene's intervention that made progress possible, bless her. How is your build coming along? I appreciate the posts you have done on the PE, I have not started that yet. Have you run into any fit issues with the plastic parts? all the dry fit runs I have done so far are ok, except the tubular mast supports, they are way off being true, and I have noticed the wood deck fit is a bit off under the shelter deck.
