After a very long trip to winged things, I finished my 1/144 P-36 at Pearl Harbor, and looked around my stash. What shall I do?

At my slow build pace due to kids and work, I decided it would be something easier. A shake and bake kit, which I would however superdetail. I was very excited to see the Flyhawk doing several RN destroyers, and also IBG bringing new ones. I could not decide which of them is to start with. Thus I decided to go with these twin build, and place them on common base. The timespan I decided upon is the

One destroyer will be the Jervis. This will be an FH kit of HMS Kelly Deluxe with slight modifications. Jervis was actually a much more deserved ship, and had 13 battle honors, most at RN during WW2 (shared with similarily little known HMS Orion and HMS Nubian). She sported nice 507A/507C camo, and was the leader of 14th DF. She is planned mainly OOB, except the crew and some minor details from my PE parts box.

Another will be HMS Ilex. I would be utilizing the IBG's kits of Garland, Glowworm and Ithuriel to get the right fit. Luckily, the IBG kits are designed to mix and match parts to get the right config ;) She also had the 507A/507C pattern, and the only change from as built was the cut down main mast and some splinter shields around guns. I will also go with mainly OOB here, except for the gun shields from either WEM E-class or Five Star E-class set, flyhawk brass barrels, and flyhawk PE 0.5 Quad Vickers.

I would place them in a seascape inside a T-Case showcase, which is 227x118x83 mm. As usual, I would make a small 3d printed socket which I would install on top of showcase's base, laminate it all around with wood, add a brass name shield, and make the seascape on top.

Started the paint work, using life color paints. Being home with flu allowed me 1.5 days of non stop modeling

Camo is freehand, using 507A and 507C shades. Hull has all the anchor gear in place, and some basic wash and drybrush. PE breakwater drove me nuts yesterday, but its in place. Superstructure lower levels are I am not sure for all the deck colors, but decided for corticene fore and aft, with no visible walkways on dark shade midships, dark B and X platforms, and light top level bridge is planned...

Hi,

Perhaps a little too late but if you mix a little of their 507A with 507C and vice versa, you'll get closer to the real paints which had quite a bit less contrast than results from the neat paints.

Thanks! A few layers of flat, pigments, etc will dull her out significantly when done. I used the Lifecolors 507B to drybrush, so its actually lighter then 507A. The photos also look more dramatic on contrast compared to my eyes ;)

Looking good! I would echo the sentiment above that 507A should be a bit lighter there but as you said once dry brushed and clear coated it might look lighter. So looks like all is under control.

The main guns got their brass barrels, and are now covered with the first layer of paint.
I finished the lower superstructure levels, and I am in progress detailing the upper one. That one is extremely detailed, and would get something like 20-25 parts in plastic and etch, even if it is just around 2x2 cm in size...

As I found out, Jervis had an interesting torpedo tubes combination. As she went to Mediterranean, her rear tubes were replaced with a 4" gun. As she arrived, the 4" gun was removed, and a new torpedo tubes set was installed. However, only the quadruple tubes were available, of a PQR Mk.2 type - which originally were the usual Pentad, but had the middle tube removed. So, since mid-40 until 43 she had one pentad and one pentad-quadruple tube sets, for 9 torpedos.

The pentads in the kit are gorgeous, but surgery of them to make a PQR is complex, and it would not look well. Thus I decided to go another way. I took the plans of the pentad, and made a 3D model for that. For details, I referenced the kit parts. Of course, in 3D I could easily remove the middle tube.

First print had a minor defect - I left the tubes hollow with only the insert of the warhead forwards, and the walls were too thin, when I printed, they collapsed while cleaning. I thus plugged the holes with a solid cylinder, and now they are being printed while I am at the office.

After a play with settings, I found ones which produced fine torpedo tubes.
After a week of break due to hand injury (carrying an IKEA showcase/cupboard for my books and models alone into the second floor is not a good idea for your ligaments), I went on to detail the bridge block. This is extremely detailed in the kit, and has over 20 parts of PE and plastic to be fitted into a part less then 2 cm in length. Plus, I would need to make the crewmen for that now, too, as it else would be too risky to damage the things like PE window frame.

Nice work! I like the unique torpedo launcher - that's a cool little detail.
