I am building the Italeri 1/720 USS Carl Vinson for a friend of mine whose son served on her at that time. I am using the 1999 Carl Vinson kit and will be updating it to 2014. I am also going to scratch build the hanger deck and add other details to her. She probably won't be 100% accurate but should be somewhat close (I hope) when I finish. I have quite a few upgrades for the kit and am looking forward to this build. I don't do many carriers and the few I have done were all WWII era carriers so this is a new challenge for me. Here is the kit and the upgrades I have for her: PE set, trumpeter aircraft, resin upgraded CIWS and RAM launchers, addition PE weapon sets, and PE deck equipment.

Got a little bit accomplished on her. She will be waterline and in a sea base when completed so I separated the lower hull and cleaner up the waterline plate. I removed a little molded on detail from the hull in placed where there will PE added. I added the kit weapon/sensor sponsons and will be scratch building the additional sponsons that aren't included in the kit.

Got to spend a little time on her over the last couple days. I have been working on the hanger deck. I added the deck itself and the interior walls with styrene sheet. I started filling the gaps and such and will be starting on the interior details next.

Did more work on the hanger deck. Added a little bit of detail inside. I am not going to do too much since most of it won't be visible from the outside. I am going to try and model some activity around the hanger bay openings to make her look busy. I cleaned up the inside a little bit, added some stuff to the stern, and then primed the inside and outside of the hull. Still more cleaning and such but I hope to start painting the hanger deck soon.

Painted the hanger bay walls and floor. Need to do a little touching up now. Also started on the flight deck and a couple other areas. Need to work on some of the planes and equipment for the hanger deck next.

No new pics quite yet but I started on some of the aircraft for the hanger deck and some of the misc. equipment. I also painted the flight deck and started working on some detail there. I ordered some 3D printed 1/700 missiles and such for the aircraft and those are scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I will get some new pics up this weekend. Moving right along.

Here are the latest pics. I have the wings folded and tails attached to a few of the F-18C's. The missiles and bombs I ordered arrived today. Need to clean, prep, and paint them. The paint on the flight deck wasn't completely dry when I took the picture. It looks much better now. Still need some touching up.

I have been very busy with work lately and haven't had much time but I did get a little bit done. I got the flight deck mounted, assembled the island and started adding some details to it, painted the arresting cables, and gloss coated the flight deck to get ready for decals.

Got the flight deck decals done and did some more work on the island. Added a sponson on the front and have more stuff to build and add. Still needs washing and the flight deck needs a lot of washing and weathering.

Will be watching your deck weathering work with a lot of interest. That is the next step in my 1/730ish Midway build

Finally got down to some weathering on the flight deck. I did two coats of weathering using acrylic washes and then with some oil based paints and mineral spirits. I also mounted the island on her. I am going to do a bit more work with the oil paints and spirits to finish up the deck.
