Hi everyone, I want to make AFV Club's 1/700 Knox Class kit as Turkish ship TCG Zafer (ex-USS Thomas C. Hart).

I want to showcase the ship on a wooden base, so I'll build it as a full Hull.

I melted the solid humbrol putty with using cellulosic thinner and revell glue to make the hull. I cut out plastic sprue pieces and filled them in between.

Hi there Kubilay and all,

Great project. These Knox-class frigates are a part of my own life, as I was serving on board F73 Cataluña for two years, 1984-985. HWhat sleek lines they had, and how beautiful they were...

You will like to know that most of the pictures in this number were made by me in March 2007, on board F74 Asturias, the last frigate of my former 31st. Squadron still active at that moment. The whole photo album contents a total of ca. 300 high quality pics, taken in every possible corner of the ship, and definitely from a modeler´s point of view. That´s the reason why I was requested to release them for publication in this magazine.

Feel free to ask for as many pictures as you may need, of any detail that you consider necessary. It will be a pleasure to lend a hand to another friend modeler.

Best regards from this side,

Willie.

Hi Willie.

Thank you sir, I totally agree with you, these ships have a beautiful silhouette and great lines.

You're very lucky to have served on these ships. TCG Zafer was the last ship to leave the Turkish Navy and was decommissioned in 2012. As a ship enthusiast, I am lucky to have seen these ships before they were decommissioned. In addition, Turkey keeps one of these ships, TCG Ege, as a museum ship in Izmir.

I have AK Interactive's book as a reference, and I think it's a great reference. I also use http://www.navsource.org a lot. if there's something I can't figure out, I won't hesitate to bother you for a photo reference.

Stay home, make Ship model, stay safe :thumbs_up_1:

Best wishes from this Side of Mediterranean :wave_1:

Kubilay

Ah, now I find out, right before the only summer holiday in 20 years that I probably won't be able to spend in Izmir... :Mad_6:

Very nice work by the way!
I think I have seen one of these ships around 2008-2010 showing the flag in front of Kaş, but I'm not sure. Is that possible?

Cheers,

Marijn

Thanks for the great inspiration with your build here. I served on USS Stein FF-1065 in 1987-89. I still haven't gotten up the courage to attempt a build of this 1/700 kit. I appreciate seeing your techniques, although I don't do full-hull models like yours.

It looks to me that you are only using generic photo-etch - nothing made specifically for this ship. Is that correct?

Hi Marjin,

If you have the opportunity to visit the museum in the future, there is also the Balao class submarine TCG Pirireis and the German Jaguar class torpedo fast attack craft TCG Kasırga in the museum site.

In those years, only TCG Muavenet and TCG Zafer were in service in the Turkish navy, and their base was Aksaz Naval Base near Kaş. She is probably one of those two ships.

Best regards.

Kubilay

Hi Rick.

Thank you for support and kind words sir.

Correct. I couldn't find the specific PE set produced by the Flagship Models for this ship. I bought some handrail and ladder sets from China before Corona, and I try to do as much detail as I can with the Photo etches I used to have.

Best regards.

Kubilay.

Turkish Navy replaced the Satcom system with a different dome, most likely the antenna belonging to the inmarsat system. I built the antenna and base as scratchbuild.

Many thanks Kubilay!

I found it online. It is very close to ferry port that we always take when going to Çeşme (my family lives in Bostanlı). A visit should be easy next time we're in the neighborhood!

There is at least one dedicated PE set for the Knox class, coming from Flagship models.
https://flagshipmodels.com/collections/1-700-details/products/1-700-scale-knox-class-frigate-details
However, it was designed in 1995 and is fairly coarse by today's standards.

It has a couple of non-generic including rounded railings and lattice platforms. Unfortunately for me, the 1052 class had two different designs of lattice topmast, and my ship, Stein, had the one that is not in this set.

I was wondering if you had found a modern set that has parts tailored for the ship.
Thanks,
Rick
