Ever since I first read Red Storm Rising, I've wanted a model of Pharris. I had the WEM Knox class, but lost the unbuilt kit during a move. I acquired the Orange Hobby kit last year. Now it's time to build.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX???!?!

The major components. Being a resin kit, there are large casting stubs that need to be removed.

Etch and turned brass parts.

Mack and aft superstructure cut. This resin smells like Testors orange tube cement when cut. I like it. Nice to have the smell around, even if I haven't used it since I was a kid.

I have to decide if I want the hangar extended or not.

I like how OH utilizes the lower hull casting stubs as locating tabs.

I very much want to build an Orange Hobby kit someday; just love the look of them in the box.

Good luck, you seem to be off to a solid start.

Also, I re-read and re-watched The Hunt for Red October a year or two ago. Both the book and movie hold up surprisingly well.

Coming along. Got a few spots to refill.

Some voids in the cutwater. Going to have to use some green stuff on these. I still need to blend in the sonar dome.

While the kit parts are much better than equivalent injection molded parts, I'm replacing with much better detailed Veteran Models parts.

I see that I am not alone in having a lot of work with gluing the halves of the fuselage. I spent a lot of time on it myself and then put the model away. In any case, I will monitor the construction closely.

Just finished. I hate sanding, but the results are worth it.

This looks exciting. Can’t wait to watch you work through it! I like what you’re doing.

Rudder position on the kit was incorrect.

maccrage, are you certain about the rudder position as this link appears to be center line not off center like yours?

should have sanded the gun mount housing smooth 1st before gluing the gun barrel to the mount.

The mount doesn't look loke that to my naked eye, but it definitely shows up in the pics. And the rudder is offset to allow the shaft to be removed without removing the rudder.

Robert E. Peary, the ship this kit is actually of.

Photos aside, an official US Congressional hearing does note the "offset rudder" of the Knox class: https://books.google.ca/books?id=FVDQo1 ... er&f=false

how much space is there between the back of the asoc launcher & the front face of the superstructure as your picture seems not enough space between the 2?

There's room. It looks like less from that angle since the base of the superstructure is angled for the ASROC magazine.
