As Hiryu needed five mounts, I decided that the Very Fire set was the way to go for me.

I went through a similar exercise with the 25mm mounts. As nice as many of the resin cast and printed units are, I feel that Fine Molds units give me 90-95% of the detail with much less effort. It didn't hurt that I was able to add PE sights from some Hasegawa units.

Looking good, Dan. Those Very Fire guns are very nice (pun intended). It would be a shame if they are truly going out of business.

Thx, M.

I sure hope not. I actually wrote them today about that, not that I'm expecting an answer.

For those who skipped ahead, I made a visual comparison of IJN 1/350 12.7cm/40cal. mounts at the bottom of the previous page.

Well, my airbrushes finally came back from repair, and I was able to stripe the flight deck. I still have to finish the light array platforms for either side at the very stern.

Wow, I have been truly lax in updating this thread.

First, one more shot from the previous set of shots showing the stern. Next, an overhead shot from about three weeks ago.

Then some detail shots of various stages of work that occurred earlier, plus painting the hull. Over the next few days, I'll post more detail shots concerned with various areas of work.

Good progress indeed. Beautiful work Dan! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Will you still apply a wash to the hull details too?

Dan, those railings are perfection. The deck with the arresting hooks are magnificent. Amazing work, keep it up :cool_2:

Thank you guys.

I'm not sure, Marijn. My preferred aesthetic is dockyard fresh, which doesn't involve any weathering. In this case, and scale, the flight deck was just too bland. So, I chose to lightly highlight it, since it typically gets the most attention, consciously or not. I'm also leery of attempting the same technique on the hull, as I'm pretty sure I can't avoid heavy buildup in jointed areas, of which there are MANY.

I also think lighting comes into play. If lighting throws shadows, then maybe highlighting isn't as necessary (per my teaser photo below).

Work on the ship's boats was completed as well. I substituted 9m cutters and 12m motor launches from the Tamiya 1/350 IJN boat set as I felt these are better shaped and sized. Their 12m launches certainy allow for the installation of stored rear accommodation ladders, something not indicated for in the kit.

That is some extremely sharp PE work. No idea how you can keep it that straight!
