looks nice,
I wonder though what the backstory is behind these CM ships? As I don't understand how Fujimi otherwise would just put these on the market without a backstory...

It seems to be an extension of the "egg plane" phenomenon. Hasegawa was the earliest recent (there was another company back in the 80s who did it with airliners) producer of them, and now all the major Japanese manufacturers except Tamiya have gotten into it. Even those in China have joined in, with Meng's "Warship Builder" series and AFV Club's Q Series.
