After quite some time I am glad to report that I almost finished the basic painting of HMS Valiant.
Painting was done using the same colours (in fact the very same tinlets) that I utilised for the painting of HMS Barham. The steel decks received a coat of dark grey (WEM AP507A, somewhat lightened) after the wood deck had been masked. The boot topping and the funnel top were sprayed very dark grey (Revell 9 Anthracite Grey) without masking. The order of colours applied to the hull sides was dictated by the masking procedure: the very complex shape of the bulges and the protruding shapes upon them makes masking the boot topping from above nigh impossible.

In the pictures some overspray is evident over the actual top edge of the boot topping This, however did not prove to be a problem of any sort. Next all the objects to be found on the wooden deck were carefully picked out by hand with middle grey (let’s call it a faded AP507A, in fact an older WEM AP507B, considerably lightened and toned down by adding white and flesh colour) using a fine bush.

The same colour was used as the darker component of the duotone camouflage. Btw I find this camouflage rather effective and striking. The boot topping was masked and the above mentioned shade of grey added to the hull sides and to every other detail where it was deemed appropriate.

the lighter camouflage colour, light grey (WEM AP507C, slightly lightened) was sprayed and brushed to the remaining vertical surfaces.
