For some reason my pom-pom pics are repeated - this is not the way I posted them...

Simply fantastic work George! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
Excellent call on the blast bags. They look much better indeed with the extra 'sag' below.

It looks like we will start painting our long-term projects around the same time! ;) :wave_1:

Greg, Jamie, Martin and Marijn,

thank you for the continuous interest and support!

Marijn, many thanks, but I do not think that both projects are comparable: mine is just another run-of-the-mill steel warship diorama, whilst yours as a truly outstanding achievement. The result will be something never seen before!

George

I have been following this project (in silence and in admiration)!

The level of detail and the extra mile effort put in this built is just amazing - as usual with your works - and that can be seen in the last photos of the unpainted ship, with all those different medium colours.

Looking forward to see the colour and atmosphere developments :)

Rui

Hi !

I somehow missed the last update,
==> it looks all very sharp!
a lot of time expended to keep it all aligned and crisp!

Paint will bring her to life!

Rui, SG1, Jim,
thank you very much!
I have been extremely busy with professional work lately, that's the reason for the late reply.
Still, I could find some extra time to commence painting and since have made promising progress.
Pictures will follow (hopefully) soon.

Thank you, Mr. Church!
I love how you improved the old R-class kits.
Now here's another update, I hope you will like this one, too!

After quite some time I am glad to report that I almost finished the basic painting of HMS Valiant.

Painting was done using the same colours (in fact the very same tinlets) that I utilised for the painting of HMS Barham. The steel decks received a coat of dark grey (WEM AP507A, somewhat lightened) after the wood deck had been masked. The boot topping and the funnel top were sprayed very dark grey (Revell 9 Anthracite Grey) without masking. The order of colours applied to the hull sides was dictated by the masking procedure: the very complex shape of the bulges and the protruding shapes upon them makes masking the boot topping from above nigh impossible.

In the pictures some overspray is evident over the actual top edge of the boot topping This, however did not prove to be a problem of any sort. Next all the objects to be found on the wooden deck were carefully picked out by hand with middle grey (let’s call it a faded AP507A, in fact an older WEM AP507B, considerably lightened and toned down by adding white and flesh colour) using a fine bush.

The same colour was used as the darker component of the duotone camouflage. Btw I find this camouflage rather effective and striking. The boot topping was masked and the above mentioned shade of grey added to the hull sides and to every other detail where it was deemed appropriate.

After another session of tedious masking

the lighter camouflage colour, light grey (WEM AP507C, slightly lightened) was sprayed and brushed to the remaining vertical surfaces.

Masking was done using Tamiya masking tape and Humbrol Maskol masking fluid. Sometimes masking was not necessary, e.g. in the case of main turrets dark grey tops and middle or light grey sides were painted only by were careful handling of my Aztec airbrush. Next small details like brown booms and thwarts in the rowing-boats, green and red position lamps, off-white blast bags were painted by hand. Note that in the final pictures some superstructure parts and the main turrets are temporarily attached to the hull. With only some minor touch-ups remaining to be done, the painting can be called complete. The model now looks sterile and toy-like. Next I will apply washes to tone down the harsh contrasts and blend the colours. Then shadows and highlights will be accentuated – with a myriad of small, protruding details this is going to be a tedious job indeed.

She's looking very nice in her warpaint! Looking forward to more.

Martin, thank you for your devouring interest in my work!
I will try to keep up the level of finish reached in my previous builds.

Looking very good! :thumbs_up_1:

and that is where the time lies... it takes soo long to get the degree of sharpness that your models have !!

What a beautiful model. Looking at it again and again. There are 1/350 models I have seen with less level of detail and sharpness to them.
