Fantastic boats, and cranes. Wow.

Neat trick on the boats using PE for the hand grabs. Smart.

Thank you guys!

Little progres: the masts are ready for painting. I used the Master Model mast set, and where I saw it was necessary, I glued 1-1 small circles of thin wires at certain heights on the mast. The crow’s nest seemed to be the most difficult, but in the end I solved it quite simply: I used trash! In other words, I think a lot of people tend to collect everything in such a way that it will be useful for something one day (according to my family, I pile up the garbage...). Well, I have had this pen insert among things left to me by my grandfather for many years. But its diameter was just right, and I was able to shape it into the correct form by filing it down.

Very nice mast Sszabi! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Don't you love it when those non-modelling parts happen to be exactly right for the project?
Unfortunately, that doesn't happen often...

Hello!

Thank you Marijn! I have been dealing with the base for a while, the deadline is pressing and things are moving slower than I thought.

I framed the foam with balsa wood sheets. I made the surface from air-dry plastic. I started with the aluminum foil method like before, but it didn't work out well, so I started something new.. It will be more textured if I also use Vallejo and AK gels, and I will complete the waves with cotton wool and paint.

Any suggestions? Now it can still go in the trash if it's crap..

For inspiration you may want to look at Werner de Keersmaeckers' gallery. Apart from what you have already mentioned Werner uses tissue paper form the wave crests. http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html

That looks excellent Sszabi!

Personally, I feel crumbled aluminium never produces convincing waves. It is just too 'cornery'. This is much better!

Instead of cotton wool, you can also use toilet paper (single ply, without texture) for bow waves and wave crests. It turns nicely translucent when infused with liquid superglue or gloss varnish, after which some extra white foam can be painted on with paint. This is how Werner does his bow waves and they look stunning in the flesh. He also uses the white fluff that you find on the filter of the dryer for clothes instead of cotton wool for small spray. It is much more subtle than cotton wool. You have to dry a very white cotton shirt though to get nicely white fluff! :)

The general waves look very good. If you want to introduce even smaller wavelets, you can add these after painting with AK Transparent Water Gel.

I've made some progress with just these water tanks. Unfortunately, there is no really good picture of this area, I only found part of the details, e.g. about the pipes that start from the two outer tanks. The large museum model doesn't have these on it either, and the pictures of the Lusitania didn't help ... So some of the things may have become fiction...

Thank you so much for your research work on these water tanks! I was running into the same lack of information with my 1:350 build. Now a good reason to tak that up again.

I only saw a few photos of the funnels from above, it’s not clear if they have some sort of grid on them like the ones for example seen on the Olympic-class ships. In a photo of Lusitana, I saw only one such item on top of the 3rd funnel, but in the pictures of Mauretania it is not there. If anyone knows anything about this, feel free to tell me, because I can fix it quickly now ;)

The first picture indeed is from Lusitania, but the lower picture is neither Lucy nor Maury: it's Titanic or Olympic! So don't assume that Maury would have this grid as well. You know, the rearmost funnels on Titanic and Olympic were fake, they were there just for the looks!

Hello!
Thanks guys, I'm slowly making progress.

Maarten, you are right about the funnel photos, the bottom one is indeed the Olympic after the Titanic tragedy (full of lifeboats on deck, maybe in the 20's). I just uploaded it so that everyone can understand what I mean about the grill on top of the funnel. But in the end, I didn't put anything on Mauretania's funnels...

In the last few days: I sprayed the base with a coat of Tamiya paint, attached the funnels, glued the small crosses on the vents, painted the boats and started to install the rigging. This is not easy because I could not find a good drawing about that. Also, it's not true, because I only found one that looks like a very old factory drawing, but the lines are so faint that I'd rather look at the museum model and photos...

Anyway, it's slowly starting to look like the real thing

Coming along VERY nicely :cool_2: How did you do the vents' crosses, glued superimposed wires?

That's right, white stretched sprues :D

Meanwhile, I realized that these crosses were painted red, just like the inside of the vents. You can see the difference between the colors in the photos. Since then, most of that vents has been placed. Every funnel has received its rigging, and the first mast is almost ready. From the rope between the mast and the first funnel, 2-2 rope run down in the direction of the bridge. However, when gluing, they remained so close to each other, as if there were only 1 thread each :mad_2:

Hi Sszabi,

Forgive me that I ask: why did you paint the skylights on the sundeck of Mauretania brown? I have seen on many pictures of Mauri these were white!

Lusitania for sure had everyting on top of the sundeck painted brown, except for the wheelhouse. But Mauretania had all the large cowl ventilators painted white, but also all the (very different!) skylights I believe. The rest (funnel bases, thermo tanks, water tanks) remained brown.

Or do you have different references than I? When I browse back through this topic pages I see multiple photos showing the white skylights. Also a pic of Lusitania just before completion, and there the skylights were brown of course.

Hi!

I also had a little problem with this at first, 3 years ago I wanted to build the ship as it was finished , but then I changed my mind...
I used the book “The unseen Mauretania” as a reference so far. According to the photos included here, when the ship was completed, and for at least 1 year after that, all superstructures and skylights on the boat deck were painted white. After - when exactly I couldn't find out - e.g. On August 30, 1909, everything was brown, except for the rear superstructure skylights.

Honestly, I like it better in brown paint, so it won't be seen on its first trip to New York, but sometime in 1910.n, (she used these colors between 1907 and 1912, so I don't think I did much wrong, because it is just right for the state before the sinking of the Titanic).

Today the last boats have been put in place, and there is already all boat crane in place. The base of the cranes is on the aft part of the boat deck down to the A deck. That's why I drilled out all of the holes for them, but I will fix them only after painting. The first 3 pairs of boat cranes are attached to the side of the ship, but they connect to it at 2 points each. I cut these small points out of styrene strips, and then glued the cranes (they are bent from wire) Maybe it looks like they are a little bit away from the hull.

Unfortunately, in the case of the boats, it is clear that they are not factory parts, the small deviations that I made during the scarving and sanding of them bother me more and more. It's a shame that I couldn't get 3D pieces :( Anyway, it'll stay like this...

The area will have to be further detailed, because the poles (???) that were placed next to the boats were not included either. I haven't got any idea what they are, but they're pretty easy to make out...
