Greetings! :wave_1:

I got into the next ocean liner project, started building the Airfix 1/600 Mauretania.

First of all, special thanks to Jim Baumann for the pictures and info he shared with me

I built what I just liked, so I apologize if it seems illogical. I cut the hull parallel to the waterline, which will make it easier to lay it on the base later. I drilled out the windows, tried to rely on the pictures as well, there are still things that have become deceptive, but these are still fixable bugs. As soon as it come, I try to using Surfacer spray and masking tape to mimic the ship’s plate surface. Given that the surface is currently flat and smooth, this is essential.

I replaced the decks with new ones from the ribbed or engraved sheets of Evergreen. I know a lot of people are building with printed decks these days, but since I can’t build so cleanly as not to mess with the paper, I’ll stick with the paintable version. I will display the windows and doors on the lower decks, I think I will cut up photoetch ladders of the right size for window frames.

On the bow deck, I have rebuilt the 2 cargo lids, the 2 steam winches, the supports leading to the anchor chain (?) And made an anchor very similar to the real one from WEM anchor etching. None of them are fixed yet, and only once after painting the deck.

So she doesn't show much yet, but I had to start this somewhere too: D
As I progress I will add pictures;)

Following this. I always liked that kit, built one in the dark days before internet. Beautiful winch!

Very nice. Where did the drums on the winches come from? Did you turn them yourself, or were they borrowed from something else?

This will be a pleasure to follow!

Great detail already, and excellent job on replacing the decks. The fit looks very precise, which is not that easy... :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Thanks guys, I'll try to build as much detail as possible.

Reigels, I used 1.0mm soldering wire for the winch drums. Because it is easy to shape, I gently pushed its surface around with the back of a knife. Then I further formed this groove with sandpaper. And then I cut to size. If a piece didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to, I started all over again. Not perfect, but I had no better idea. I might even drill the ends of the drums so they don’t have flat sides.

Greetings! :wave_1:

Unfortunately, I haven’t had enough time to deal with Mauretania :frown_2:

What has been done so far:

I drilled every window on the hull. I also tried to use the existing photos for this, but of course if I paint it all down black no one will notice the difference. Since originally the plating had some positive lines along, I had to grind this down. This was followed by a solution that I had seen several times to imitate the shell plating: I masked the lower areas, and with Mr. Surfacer 500 spray to form the hull plating. Sure, it’s far from perfect, but it’s better than a smooth sidewall. I cut off the last 3 side doors towards the stern, because for some reason they were somewhere higher and lower than the others on the casting. Anyway, looking at the drawings and pictures, they’re all in a good place, which isn’t a bad thing from a 1966 tool. I also replaced the covers of the coal loading openings. I put these up roughly because I couldn’t find exact drawings about this area anywhere.

The already finished deck is made of the Evergeen sheet, the side walls are made of plastic sheets. I didn't cut out the windows. On the one hand, because the thin strip of plastic warped with each cut, making the end result unacceptable. On the other hand, you don't see it in such a tiny gap anyway. So I took out the well-proven Eduard 1/350 ladder etch set and cut the small rectangles, then put them in place one by one. The procedure was similar for the doors, I glued a piece of ladder to it on a thin metal base, albeit by cutting out the first step from above, so I have the typical wooden door frame I saw in the pictures. It will help a lot if I paint things, it will be easier to create contrast, even if it means the doors have become too thick. Something for something…

Hi! :wave_1:
Thank you gentlemen, I will try. I made a little progress: almost all the bollards and capstans were finished, and the lower deck stanchions were almost all in place. I haven’t glued everything yet, I just put them together for the picture.

Nice and straight windows and bollards. Dit you buy those bollards somewhere or did you make them out of brass rod?

Hi!

Thanks :)
The bollards are from the Rainbow 1/700 bollards (large) set (Rb7140). I bought two of this set, and very useful

Really fine work. You make it look easy (and it's not).

Looking damn fine so far.

Honestly makes me wish more model companies would get into "the old breed" of passenger liners, and at bigger scales...

Yeah, it wouldn't be bad if there were more ocean liner kits on the market. Airfix could also bring out a new series. Some German and French ships could come from the golden age, but not from resin, because they are beautiful too, but terribly expensive ...

I’ve put this winch together for the last two nights.I think It looks better than the original part, although it is not perfect. I used for it Eduard etching, copper wire, and plastic sheets.

Tangible progress in a very nice build of an interesting subject.
Those winches are really delicate!

Thank you gentlemen, I am trying to get the most out of the model

Unfortunately, due to illness, I didn’t go the way I wanted to now. Railings are glued to the bow and the stern. I hope this will make it easier to paint everything nicely. I put an extra thread on top of the railings, as it can be clearly seen in the photos that their tops were covered with wood.
But, a lot of compromises had to be made: the factory etched railing didn’t fit the bollards, nor did the stanchions. A completely self-made railing would have solved the problem, but I can’t build one on such a small scale. So it stays that way ... :frown_2:
