She did indeed have .50 cal mounted on the forecastle. Photo below, attached caption:

"A Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat fighter (Bureau # 5244) takes off from USS Yorktown (CV-5) on combat air patrol, during the morning of 4 June 1942. This plane is Number 13 of Fighting Squadron Three (VF-3), flown by the squadron Executive Officer, Lieutenant (Junior Grade) William N. Leonard. Photographed by Photographer Second Class William G. Roy, from the ship's forecastle. Note .50 caliber machinegun at right and mattresses hung on the lifeline for splinter-protection. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. Source: (U.S. Navy)"

Yorktown had dozens of guns mounted all over her in boat pockets, on walkways, etc. Several .50 cal mounts, and many .30 cal mounts "borrowed" from the air department.

Ah, good point about that photo being Midway and not Coral Sea. I'd assume it was there at Coral Sea, but I can't spot them in the dry dock photo. I'm not exactly sure where the Wildcat photo depicts, either, as it appears to be right at the bow - due to the orientation of the Wildcat -- but I don't see a split in the lifelines from that photo that corresponds with the dry dock photo. It could be that the mounts are a little further back, which would make sense as the 20mm tub is far forward, but I'm crap at picking out details like that in b&w photos.

Because of the markings on the Wildcat, that photo is post Coral Sea and most probably Midway.

You are doing a very good job, I have been following you since the beginning of this project. :thumbs_up_1:

But on the last pictures we can see a big mistake which is not your doing but the designer of the Trumpeter model ( One more) .

The two platforms with railings are in fact the premises where the two catapults and their machinery are located. A good part of it is even missing, the transverse rooms in front of the front block.

There are also 4 pillars that support the weight of the flight deck.

Some pictures of my project of the CV-8 Hornet at 1/200, its "nearly" sistership to explain my point of view:
