Real sand! that’s cool Kym,I bet officers must’ve had a hell of time there only at the beginning say mid and maybe late 42 I remember reading Hara’s book he wrote 2 weeks after the IJN docked at Truk all the fish in the lagoon was gone, eaten by the sailors can you imagine that  being stationed at a place such that one it sure makes you forget there’s a war going on out there.

added some left over USS Hornet hanger frames for the towers

I've done exactly the same for the cranes on my dock diorama, the Hornet set is a great source of girders.

Excellent work as always Kym :thumbs_up_1:

John, I was going to thank you for the idea. When I read your post, I thought to myself, "Hey, I got a few of those". So when it came time to build a couple of tower type cranes............

Having seen your latest pics, I've got back on with work on mine which I haven't touched for a couple of months.

One thing I did notice, your jetty appears to stop in mid-air above the beach... I guess there's going to be a ramp leading up to it?

John

I've just about finished the dock area apart from fixing it permanently to the base. All small boats moving will have wakes added, more detail and figures to be added to the beach area and not to mention two more capital ships.

Coming together very nicely, Kym!

Love the reflection of the ships on the water surface and the busy jetty.. keep the pictures coming!

Absolutely impressive, Kym. You are really a master when it comes to dioramas, since you are consistently able to give them "that look" that makes them to become alive and real. Congratulations, man, great stuff.

Cheers.
Pachi.

Hi Kim:
I like your Nagato very much and intend to use your photos as a guide to build mine. One question though: since the big guns are turned to port, shouldn't the top, big fire control hands also turn in the same direction instead of staring straight ahead?
Take good care of your voluminous fleet!

I'm not too sure. Being as the ship is not 'battle ready', I thought the directors may be switched off and left at centre position. I don't know the mechanisms of the fire control system to say that they are 'hard' linked or electrically linked. Maybe an expert could answer that.

Just looking at my favourite painting of Nagato, and it even looks like the director at centre position as well.

They're electrically linked, sometimes with voicepipe backup to/from the conning tower. In action (basic scenario) the fire control position turns first, send it's info to the fire control central somewhere deep in the ship, and the turrets follow. IIRC in most IJN battleships one turret (usually 'A") could function as a control tower itself in case the tower was put out of action.
