The giant Yamato artillery was the largest caliber guns ever fitted to a battleship. Each turret weighed 2774 ton and each gun was 21.13m long. They were capable of firing 1460 kilograms armoured piercing shells to a range of 42000 meters. These guns had a rate of fire of 1.5 to 2 rounds a minute. The turrets were protected with an armour of 650 milimeters thick on the face, 250 mm on the sides and 270mm on the roof.

I only added the Pontos PE to the Tamiya kit, air brushing to be done later.

Very nice work, your proposed weathering will further highlight all the lovely chequer plate detailing on the decks. Looking forward to seeing more updates.

The main gun turrets look great too. Having been lucky enough to have visited the U.S.S. Iowa and U.S.S. New Jersey Museums before, and to have seen their main gun turrets first hand up close, I can only imagine how enormous Yamato's turrets must have been in reality.

Wow should be amazing to visit these mother of all battle ships, hoping I can do that in the future, it is on my bucket list ;-)

I finished Yamato's airplanes. Still a lot to do to finish the back deck.

The Aichi E13A (Allied reporting name: "Jake") was a long-range reconnaissance seaplane used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from 1941 to 1945. Numerically the most important floatplane of the IJN, it could carry a crew of three and a bombload of 250 kg (550 lb).

General characteristics

• Crew: 3
• Length: 11.3 m (37 ft 1 in)
• Wingspan: 14.5 m (47 ft 7 in)
• • Powered: 1 × Mitsubishi MK8 Kinsei 43 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine, 790 kW (1,060 hp) for take-off
805 kW (1,080 hp) at 2,000 m (6,562 ft)

Performance
• Maximum speed: 376 km/h (234 mph, 203 kn) at 2,180 m (7,152 ft)
• Cruise speed: 222 km/h (138 mph, 120 kn) at 2,000 m (6,562 ft)
• Range: 2,089 km (1,298 mi, 1,128 nmi)

Armament
• Guns: 1× flexible, rearward-firing 7.7 mm (.303 in) Type 92 machine gun for observer
Some aircraft fitted 2× 20mm Type 99-2 cannons in a downwards firing position in the belly
• Bombs: 250 kg (551 lb) of bombs

The F1M was originally built as a catapult-launched reconnaissance float plane, specializing in gunnery spotting. The "Pete" took on a number of local roles including convoy escort, bomber, anti-submarine, maritime patrol, rescue, transport, and anti-shipping strike; The type was also used as an area-defense fighter and engaged in aerial combat in the Aleutians, the Solomons and several other theaters. In the New Guinea front, it was often used in aerial combat with the Allied bombers and Allied fighters.

General characteristics
• Crew: 2
• Length: 9.5 m (31 ft 2 in)
• Wingspan: 11 m (36 ft 1 in)
• Empty weight: 1,928 kg (4,251 lb)
• Powered: 1 × Mitsubishi MK2C Zuisei 13 14-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine, 652 kW (875 hp) for take-off
600 kW (800 hp) at 3,500 m (11,500 ft)

Performance
• Maximum speed: 370 km/h (230 mph, 200 kn) at 3,440 m (11,290 ft)
• Range: 740 km (460 mi, 400 nmi)

Armament
• Guns:
o 2 × fixed forward-firing 7.7 mm (.303 in) Type 97 aircraft machine guns
o 1 × flexible rearward-firing 7.7 mm (.303 in) Type 92 machine gun
• Bombs: 2 × 60 kg (132 lb) bombs (1 × 250 kg bomb for suicidal missions)[8]

Definitely worth a visit alright. It is worth going to see both as the displays on each are different, some areas are open to the public on one but not on the other. Thoroughly enjoyable. Would love to see USS Missouri and Wisconsin too. Though Missouri will be difficult as Hawaii is pretty far away from Europe. Norfolk, Virginia for Wisconsin is not so bad. Hopefully when things calm down a bit.

That's a fine collection of aircraft. One forgets just how many aircraft Yamato could carry. Looking good!

Indeed, the hangar could shelter 7 of these aircrafts, amazing all underdeck.

I finished the single 25mm Anti Aircraft Guns. For the fabrication you need very stable hands :cry_3: , so sometimes it is not the case, so sometimes becoming crazy :Mad_6: :Mad_6: :Mad_6:

I don't know exactly the colour, but from the air the additional sand sacks as additional defence seems relatively a white shade, hoping my results seems relatively realistic. I am aware that for the last battle the wooden deck was painted black to have less visibility from the air at night, but sorry guys painting the wooden deck black was for me a step too far :sorry:

Yamato carried twenty-four 25-millimetre tripple anti-aircraft guns, primarily mounted amidships. Japanese military personnel said it was the most reliable Japanese anti-aircraft weapon, but second in effectiveness to the 100 mm (3.9 in) Type 98 anti-aircraft gun. The Type 96 was most effective when used at ranges of 1,000 meters or less. The Japanese military estimated that it required an average of 1,500 rounds to shoot down an aircraft at a height of 1,000 meters and a range of 2,000 meters, and that fire beyond that range was completely ineffective.

Lovely work on the triple 25mm mounts. They are little kits in themselves.

Main structure of the Yamato, spent a lot of evenings, very small PE details. Air brushing still to do.

Nice etchwork Henk. Really start to look like Yamato now.

Just one thing: the big brass part on the front of the superstructure is a jig in order to help you glue the supports for the windbreaker in place. I don't think you need to glue the jig in place though. It's just a helpful tool. Having that said, you alread glued all the details on top of it so I guess it's best to leave it in place.

Next step primer I reckon ^^

Hi Henk,
Amazing stuff you are doing! With all those ridiculously small PE parts (sometimes really a pain in the ass). But photo etch really makes a difference, especially for ships. I will be following you build with great interest because Yamato is my ultimate goal. But due to 40 years break in scale modelling, I thought I need some practise before attacking the beast. Currently working with Tamiyas IJN Kagero (so following your footsteps :thumbs_up_1: ).
Keep up the good work!

And people say I'm a bit crazy! This is awesome work - especially that PE (that's ridiculously small even by my standards) but man oh man - doesn't it just look amazing!! This will be an epic ship when she's done
Speaking of which, have you made any progress? Am keen to see more :thumbs_up_1:

This looks like it's going to be a great looking build well worth the additional PE parts. I have issues with dust as I've been banished to the garden shed for painting. The first application of paint is usually OK but the air jet always seems to raise unwanted particles so I've got into the habit of taking a break between coats of acrylic.

Hi Wouter, yeah that tool was also glued :heh: so to protect damages I kept it. Very hard to prevent the glue going in between the small parts and the tool. Will share some pictures later today, if you don't know it, you won't see it :-)
