Geday,

Decided a few months ago I would start modelling again after having worked as a GM for a few years, and finding myself having little patience anymore. I thought a good way to help me regain that would be to do some modelling again. I think now im a rare breed in this town, as I am still under the age of 30.

Also the LHS's here have really suffered from globalisation, computer games, ebay and a general apathy from the importers of plastic models and anything hobby related in Australia. Finding a decent selection of kits here is difficult.

First kit build in over 10 years and what a humdinger I picked, the Tamiya 1/700 Scharnhorst.

Having not checked out any kits since before the turn of the millenium, I had forgotten that the older kits have raised plank lines....

So a re-scribe of the deck and a general update of this 1975 kit was in order, im quite fussy and it has to look "right".

First image is of the dry fit of the kit. I have started the re-scribe but the camera i had on hand didnt capture it well, so I will post some images of that shortly.

Hi mate and welcome back.

There are a number of good stores in Melbourne.

Where are you posting from?

Huzzah to those of us less than 30 years old. Shame you would up without the redone Scharn kit from Tamiya. I just looked at my Gneiseau, looks like the plank lines are recessed. Bugger, I'd start looking abroad for a decent seller that'd ship to Oz just to get a good supply. Then again, I'm buying from the states to up here in Canada *curses USPS shipping routes* and it seems to come along decently.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone!

Im based in Adelaide, Australia. Everything here is barren, it rained here for about the first time this year a few days ago!

As for the Scharnhorst kit, everywhere ive looked it mentions raised planks, any chance you can get an image of the plank detail?, ive spent 2 weeks on the re-scribe and i still havent finished the back section of the ship, its driving me nuts, and is also my first shot at scribing. If the re-tool is good, ill just purchase that and put this hull away for a rainy day.

Nevermind, my bad. I just took the backside of my blade and ran it across the aft deck, the lines are raised. Still, once I laid on the paint, the lines aren't exceptionally noticable. Good luck on the scribing, I can imagine the annoyance.

Thanks for checking that out. Looks like I have a few more weeks of embossing tape and scribing!

Its good practice anyway.

Trust me, I don't envy you, nor do I have plans of the insanity required to rescribe the deck of the Kumano whilst I turn it into the IJN Koya... I might shave the raised lines off anyways, if I have to shuffle the barbettes on the forward deck.

New pics of scribe in progress

This is my first time doing this so it is not perfect...yet!

I think a layer or 2 of paint plus some sanding should even and smooth it out.

Finally finished the rear 1/2 of the ship...not all perfectly even, however it was my first scribe job ever, so i learnt a lot.

I used the embossing tape method
