Here's the progress on my 'fill in' of a 'fill in' project. It's a Yankee Modelworks 1:350 44' Mogami hybrid. It's taking a lot of scratch building to bring it up to the Japanese drawings I have, but getting there.

Very stunning Kym! Is the flight deck scratchbuilt and will you be pacing her in the Truk dio or another one?

Nick, the flight deck is part of the kit. As for the setting, I will probably do a smaller version of Truk with some of these late war IJN kits about to be released. I see there is a hybrid Ise coming soon which might look interesting parked next to the cruiser version.

Quick question: I am noticing that the roller blind covering the gun sight of the forward 5" mount is on the right hand side, but those for the rear mount is on the left hand side. Are the shields of the two 5" mounts suppose to be mirror images of each other like that? Or should they be identical?

Yes Chuck, they are supposed to be identical. Everything is just sitting in place - nothing fixed yet. But I will definitely be making sure that I have them in their right gun tubs come gluing time.

I've had to make some decisions concerning the flight deck. Apparently the very rear section (fantail) was added in late '44, but the YMW's instructions don't show what the area looked like. They say a pair of triple anti-aircraft guns were mounted there, but show no shielding, also they show that singles were mounted along the outside edge of the flight deck. The reference I have only show the slightly earlier version - with no fan-tail, so with a bit of artistic licence, I added splinter shielding to the triples and ammo boxes to each of the singles. The kit also does not supply the forward triples directly behind the super-firing turret, these were also scratch built. The kit was also short on a few of the ship's boats, so I might have to purchase one of Hasegawa's special frets.(I did have heaps leftover from the Nagato and Takao builds, but sanded the bottom's flat for the Truk dio.)

I don;t have access to my references at the moment, but I think your assumptions for add'l AA & platforms are reasonable, Kym. Don't know their sources either, but noted IJN artist Takeshi Yuki and Jeff Lin have come to similar conclusions. See Jeff's 1944 Mogami at: http://blog.roodo.com/duroyal420/archives/234611.html

plus Mr. Yuki's work:

Thanks Dan. I thought Jeff built a 44' Mogami, but just could not find it. Those pics are going to be a god-send in finishing this kit.

A few more of progress. I have been slowed down in finishing the central area as some aftermarket parts have not arrived yet. On the next IJN ship build, I will definitely add the rope splinter shielding to the positions before fixing to the ship, what a hassle. Big problems with the aircraft dollies, they just aren't tall enough. When the aircraft are mounted on them, the pontoons are still just touching the deck when in reality, they should nearly be at shoulder height. I'm probably at about 75% completed now.

Nick,
I used some of the figures from the Fujimi Kongo kit, theres heaps of them. They are mixed with L' Arsenal resin figures on the ship.
