Here are a few photos of a little side project I'm working on. It's the Trumpeter 1/350 Essex kit, which I plan (hope?) to build as CV-12 Hornet:

The pictures were taken at my local IPMS club meeting this past Friday - the flight deck and island are just dry fitted to the hull for effect. I'm still working on filling and sanding all the bloody seams in the hull - I should have bough stock in Bondo and in 3M sandpaper before starting this project! When finished, the kit will represent Hornet in 1944, using the very lovely Air Group Two decals just release by Starfighter Decals. I am not going to try and match the insane talents of Tim and Steve and superdetail her...but along with PE, I will be using some L'Arsenal products to replace the 5 inch twins and the 20mm to replace the kit supplied parts. The 40mm don't look that bad to me, I plan on using those with the PE enhancements.

I have two other 1/350 Essex kits (Yorktown and Franklin) in the stash, but after struggling with this kit, I've already found a buyer for Franklin and I'm not sure what I'll do with Yorktown. If I do build her, it will be waterline, NOT full hull, as the fit between the upper and lower hull halves is abysmal.

EDIT: Some photos to show the progress before and after the above photos

Martin, Hornet will be fabulous in your skilled hands!

Although the Trumpy Essex class kits have their problems, they are truly satisfying to build and really impressive when done. I'll actually be saddened to complete mine, so much so that I'd like to try to build another into an angled-deck Yorktown CVS-10 say about 1965-1970.

I can see my Tico/Oriskany conversion will be staying in the box for awhile!
