I finally have made a start on the base for my next epic dio. This version of a Japanese naval base on Truk will have more of the island showing including an airstrip, shore defence Anti-aircraft emplacements and a cast of thousands. The hills might look a little funny at the moment as I ran out of foliage covering and the one at the far end is incomplete. I've used spare resin gun tubs for the AA pits and some Evergreen as the ammo bunker entrances. As I hate doing those pesky little 1:350 aircraft, I might just invest in some of those new Pitroad pre built sets for the airstrip areas. The first picture is photo of Truk Lagoon that I used as a sort of reference.

That is awesome. I love the realistic jungle covered mountains. I would love to do something like that for Guadalcanal. Keep us posted.

Thanks guys. I've made a bit of progress with the island base and am in the process of test fitting the oil pipeline from the dock to the pumping station (last pic). I can't do much more than that until I pick up the resin cast oil/fuel tanks from my mates place. The next biggest problem is scratch building some dock cranes from my bits and pieces boxes. I used most of the crane type stuff in the other dio and I don't want to have to totally do one in styrene again. mmm. think! think!

Basically finished except for the crowning glory, IJN Akagi.

The base for my conversion, (ISW T2 tanker hull) to a IJN Kawasaki Type Oiler arrived today and not being one to stare idly for too long, I jumped right in. Using what drawings and paintings I have, I first cut the stern superstructure to shape. Next I waterlined it, as the hull is a one piece item. The last couple of pics are where I'm up to with the superstructure. This little project should keep me going until the Akagi turns up.

Certainly will be. I'll end up getting a 6-pack of them.
Here's today's work. Completed the centre walkway, stairways, and some deck supports. Also started on the big 'H' frame amidships. I'm starting to run out of usable spares, (IJN railing and a matching walkway for the bow section), so I might have to slow down until I can order some.

I'm still waiting for my mate to finish casting the air intake funnels, the Lionroar 'drooping' railing and Pitroad bow /stern guns to arrive, but here is where I'm up to. I've also started the weathering with some heavy oil/fuel staining the deck and hull. The last photo shows the unfinished fuel tanks in place on the base.

Well that's going to be a problem. I had pictures and drawings of five different Kawasaki type oilers an used different details from each and being Australian built, I'm going to name it
