Here are some in-progress pics of my Tamiya 1/350 USS Enterprise as she gets totally rebuilt and super-detailed. The model is about 30% complete now and will represent Big E as she appeared in the late 1980s about the time of the "Hormuz Highway Patrol".

My wonderful wife gave the terrific Tamiya kit to me as a wedding present back in 1997 and I built it OOB with the GMM set. Other well-done models on this site inspired me to pull her all apart and totally rebuild her adding additional detail and correcting some sponson shapes. Bert Kinsey's USS Enterprise in Detail and Scale is an excellent resource for a mid-to-late 1980s Big E.

Improvements to the hull:

Attachment:
File comment: Enlarged, corrected port side CIWS sponson, newly painted
flight deck, new flight deck stripes (a few more to go), and
new GMM flight deck decals - a superb set especially the foul
lines.

Attachment:
File comment: Enlarged, corrected port, aft CIWS platform and transom.
Notice that there are no life raft canisters around the Sea
Sparrow missile launcher platform. The Tamiya kit has
them here but Big E never carried canisters in this location
because the concussion of a missile launch would activate the
canisters. Also note the ordnance disposal chute installed on
the flight deck round-down. The upper side of the chute will
be painted yellow.

Improvements to the island:

Attachment:
File comment: Per D&S, additional details to the mast (not yet done), new
wiper motors for the windows, new maintenance platforms
around PRIFLY and a new finer antenna extension have
been fabricated and installed.

IM001302.jpg
IM001302.jpg [ 91.34 KiB | Viewed 3627 times ]

Attachment:
File comment: The corner window frames were thinned out a bit. Radar
platform supports were improved and openings added.

IM001303.jpg

Attachment:
File comment: New storage locker with open doors and reinforcement fillets
to the radar platforms have been installed.

Painted island in position next to the enlarged and corrected starboard CIWS station:

Attachment:
File comment: The markings come from the GMM decal set. PE railings will be
added later.

IM001331.jpg
IM001331.jpg [ 256.54 KiB | Viewed 3632 times ]

Attachment:
File comment: The deck was airbrushed with Future to help accept the
decals better. It will be dullcoated later. Under the Future,
the tie-downs were painted using a very fine paint marker.

IM001332.jpg
IM001332.jpg [ 159.72 KiB | Viewed 3627 times ]

Attachment:
File comment: The aircraft tie-downs are drilled out by hand with a pin-vise
then the all the raised detail was sanded off of the flight deck
parts. The deck looked so much better with all that out-of-
scale raised tie-down detail gone.

Much more to do. Can't recommend GMM's new CVN decal set enough.

Thanks, Dave!! Please keep posting pics! The models you show are truly inspirational!

Hello, Michael! I am afraid that those are the only pics I have of the NASM model at the moment. If we get a chance to go back to NASM I will get more pics for you!

Has the Enterprise changed the surface of her elevators?

I remember older photos showing that they were mostly a "see-through" grate. Now I see photos captioned as being the Enterprise and it looks like the entire elevator is now the same "non-skid" surface as the flight deck.

Anyone know if that's the case? And if so, when was the change?

Thanks!
Jack

They have been replaced. Enterprise's elevators are solid now, not perforated. I asked the question some time ago and IIRC they were replaced in the 90's sometime in 2 stages (2 lifts each time)

Stephen,
On the aft/port CIWS did you add sheet styrene directly to the top of the Tamiya sponson to make the correct look?
Thanks
Robert

Yes, that's right. You will have to move the chocks a bit too. The enlargement there is quite complex in shape. I recommend you study pictures closely. See:

Thanks Stephen. The pictures are a huge help.
I'll be busy rebuilding CIWS sponsons all over the place I guess.

Ah Bella Napoli - I have spent a lot of time in Napoli including the out-of-the-way places of Napoli. I even have my combat badge to drive! I was in Napoli in December 1996 on ENTERPRISE - horrible weather. I had to run the boats. I did go to Roma to see Pope John Paul II.

ENTERPRISE is in many ways much different than the Nimitz class, it is closer to the design of the KITTY HAWK class. I was the Deck Officer (First Lieutenant) and so I was responsible for seamanship and replenishment evolutions. I also served on the bridge as the Office of the Deck responsible for maneuvers and navigation.

I lived below the main deck above the reactors. Much preferred to being under the flight deck!! The ventilation ducts that passed through my stateroom were "monitored" for radiation leakage. I had a personal dosimeter that was read monthly for radiation exposure. To be honest I recieved more gamma radiation from the sun than I received radiation from the reactors.

ciao

Luca,
She does have perforated catwalks. I am actually thinking about doing the same with mine when I get time. Tom from Tom's Modelworks actually sent me a set of catwalks to try. I'm not sure how I am going to tackle that one yet.
