Hello everyone,

I have started to build the IJN Heian Maru (1/700th Hasegawa) in her role as a sub-tender around the South Pacific between 1942-1944. Before the war, Heian Maru was a luxury passenger liner and the lines of the ship reveal glimpses of that past life.

Just started on the single molded hull. This ship is one of the few Japanese warships that carried an attractive dazzle camouflage pattern on her hull (IJN Akitsushima takes the prize for most interesting camo-pattern, I think!) that I will attempt on this kit.

Good luck with the build Paul.

In case you're interested, PE davits are available for this kit: http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG3S-47

Based on her actual career, she had I16, a C1 class sub and the I40, a B1 type sub, both available together in Tamiya as I16 and I58 (B2 exterior identical with B1, so convertible to I 40). Have not received the subs via mail order yet.

Managed to paint the deck in Tamiya Deck Tan XF55 plus cargo hatches and fixtures in Sasebo Arsenal Grey XF 77.

Also, sprayed Kure Grey XF75 over the entire hull followed by the first layer of dazzle masking tape. This is followed by Model Master FS36375.

More masking work tomorrow.

I took a closer look at the kit's boat davits and they HAVE to be replaced with something niftier. Thanks for the tip.

I am also very interested to see this model grow! Great work so far!

Do you plan to add heavy weathering on her as it is on Hasegawa box art or will make a model "as from slipways"? Will it be a dio project or 'dry dock' (on a base)?

Hello,

Apart from a new warship going on her sea trials, I never leave my ship builds without weathering at sea. She'll be shown at full swing in Truk lagoon. I'll leave the details on the exact composition for later (and suspense!).

After a full weekend of masking and spraying I have gotten the hull camouflage in place!!! :woo_hoo:

I'll have to detail this ship's deck by the layer since many sections are inaccessible once the next layer goes over it.

Great that you will have that weathering - I was actually caught by that Hasegawa box art.

Great paint work and camo!

Hello everyone,

More deckwork around the Heian Maru. Time for some detailing work as the deck layers pile on. Even added some visible submariners on R&R along the main gallery because these would not be assessible once the top deck gets added on amidships. Lot's of PE staircases to add on as well.

Hello everyone :wave_1: ,

It's been a busy 2 weeks at work but I have managed to squeeze in some "dockyard" time. Managed to get more fittings and details on the deck. Also my IJN subs arrived last week .

Hi everyone,

More work done on a long holiday weekend. Added the lifeboats along the main gallery that is one of the main features of this ship. After getting the tip about the davits, I decided to sculpt the existing plastic instead of getting the Hikawa Maru PE set. The sculpting was painstaking (8 units all together) but I hope the results are worth the while. I hope to get to the vertical structures really soon (masts and derricks). Also added the bedrolls using Tamiya dual-epoxy putty to sculpt and add around the bridge's top deck and the observation deck on top of the poopdeck. Also added sandbags around the triple barreled AA guns.

Colors that I used:

"Managed to paint the deck in Tamiya Deck Tan XF55 plus cargo hatches and fixtures in Sasebo Arsenal Grey XF 77.

Also, sprayed Kure Grey XF75 over the entire hull followed by the first layer of dazzle masking tape. This is followed by Model Master FS36375."

Seal the colors with Future Floor Polish.

Apply a wash of burnt umber + black oil paint plus turpentine. :wink_3.gif

Between long stretches of the day job and household chores, here are the latest snippets on the build. Looking more like a real ship.....

All deck fittings, derricks and masts attached.
All railings and lifelines installed
Awaiting rigging and final weathering. :woo_hoo:
