what do you think would happen if the US wanted to take Truk lagoon?
The marines wouldn't even try
The marines would have captured the lagoon
The USN would start a siege
The USN would blast the Lagoon out of the water
The USN would go fire bombing
The USAAC would drop another nuke
The US would just bypass the entire operaton

I'm back, here to show the pics of the base. Finally!

Please remember, painting done so far is not the finished product, and please, if you have any suggestions, post them. I'll try and do something about them. And I realize the ground needs repainting.

Russ, those will help. I am working on designing the actual docks, and since this is only a PT base, pontoon causeways will probably help - a lot. Do you know how big each segmant was? know they are in sections of 5x5x7 feet, but I don't know how many sections are in each segment of causeway.

I think they put together as many as needed to get the length and width that they wanted.

By the way, that truck carrying a pontoon on another of your posts is an Army pontoon bridge section made of inflated rubber. Rubber and coral do not play together very well so they were really for river crossings.

The crane truck, well that could work but if you took a tracked vehicle and cut it down to the track level, then you could add a cab and boom to make a crawler crane, which would be appropriate too. Here are some Seabee photos:

Okay, next post will show progress on the vehicles and small boats. (Still haven't figured out how long it willl be until I order the LCP, Pitroad, and WEM PT Boats) I also haven't gotten the necessary Evergreen products and Photo Etch sets. (For that, I used what came with the Dragon Pennsylvania, San Diego). I'll post pics of the progress soon.

Because this is a What-if, and I want as many different variants of the boats, there are no hull numbers. This boat, the one that is coming back from a partol, is based on PT-171. There is a 37mm on the bow, and the parts circled in red are the pair of 20mm guns on the wings of the bridge. Still haven't even gotten the Niko 40mm gunsand WEM twin 20mms, and I'm still looking for a way to scratch the torpedoes and mast.

With these times, I'm afraid I will be changing the ships in the Harbor again. :( But to what I don't know... Anyone have any ideas? Try to keep in 1/700, and small combatants please.

Okay, really? 28 posts, 22 of which are mine. That's just not cool. :cool_1: Anyway, the current plan is for Subchasers, PGMs, and PTs to be placed in the harbor. Now, what others can anyone think of, that is available on the market?

Here is the newly created backstory of this What-if scene:

1944: The US takes the Philippines and builds it up to a true stronghold. For a morale boost, Japan launches an all-out assault on some of it's old defeats of 1942/43. After hard battles, the US faces a bitter defeat at Guadalcanal, and with it, Ulithi Atoll. After another string of victories at Tarawa and Guam, Japan decides that it wants more. They go for one of their original targets: Port Moresby. They take the port, but with heavy resistance, they can't go further. Now, without a forward base at Ulithi, or an airfield at Guadalcanal, the Allies have two options: they can take back the lost bases, and face casualties greater than the original battle, or, they can make a two-step jump through two dying Japanese bases: Truk Lagoon, and Rabaul Harbor. Both were victems of the Isaland-hopping campaign, left to whither on a vine. Both would make easy targets, and perfect stepping stones for Port Moresby, Guadalcanal, and Ulithi Atoll.

1946: A Task Force; my special What-if Task Force, and the 7th Fleet, would sorty off to Truk Lagoon from the Philippines. They would go on and land the Marines and provide air support. Moderate casualties, and progress is slow. After about 2 months, 1 island remains to be taken, and that island would by now be as defended as Okinawa. On the other islands, it is already being built up into a working harbor. Repair facilities, piers, oil tanks, and barracks are all being built up. Some of the larger islands are already accomodating Essex class ships. The smaller, previously uninhabited islands are being built up with AA outposts and are having piers built for small combatants. That is where my diorama comes in...

I must say this was a very brave under taking. I truly love the WHAT-IF approach, it gives a much better option. I have have had a similar idea that started in 2008. After buying a Gato 1/72 scale Submarine.....I started looking for a great Subject to base it on - Came across the story of Operation of attack on Truk Atoll. Where a Balao Submarine USS Tang rescued a bunch of Aviators off Truk during the battle.

Well the idea as what does with modelling got out of hand. I eventually came up with a concept WHAT-IF - What if Germans somehow came to the ''rescue'' of Truk Atoll Base and the entire Atoll became a massive Fortress. With quite a few of the Luft '46 plus Japanese futuristic Weapons being produced on the various Islands.

So coming back to your amazing concept - I think this is a stunning idea.
Personally I believe the main reason that you are not getting any modellers support is because very few modellers actually can imagine a true WHAT-IF Concept.

I suggest posting your article on this Forum as well http://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php - these fellows will really be happy to see this amazing Project taking shape.

I will be definitely be following your progress and hope to see the completion of this amazing Project.
