Hello everyone,

Here are some progress pics of my Queen Elizabeth, built from the HP Models kit. The camouflage uses MS4a, B5, MS2 and MS3 as shown in the third volume of the Warship Perspective books by Alan Raven. The actual pattern was drawn on the kit with a lead pencil using various books and some amazing pictures given to me by a fellow modeller.

Since I have never seen a built up QE from HP Models I was a bit apprehensive about buying it but I finally bought it and was rather surprised by the kit. It is pretty good with some nice details and excellent casting. There are, however, some parts that are not symetrical when you look a them from the top but once installed it does not bother me too much. When all the various details are installed it should make an impressive little model :thumbs_up_1: I'll be replacing the main turrets with those forthcoming from Admiralty Modelworks. The 4.5" turrets and some of the ship's boat are from WEM (not in the pictures) I'm replacing those parts mainly because there are items out there that are more detailed but the kit parts could be used since they are not so bad.

Enjoy :wave_1:

Good to see a kit that's not commonly modelled :thumbs_up_1:

Nice paintwork! Brush or air-brush?

Can I ask something about the QE class? Many images I've seen of them in the WW2 era while sailing show them noticably bow down. Is this water-pressure on the bulges thus forcing the bow down?

Cheers

Thanks for the kind comments! I'll try and post more updates maybe next week when I have something new to show.

The model is brush painted and for this camouflage I decided not to use any masking tape. In the end it was not that hard to paint but it was a bit long since I corrected the pattern when new information came along.

Cheers :wave_1:

Hello Sylvain,

nice job on your QE battleship. Especially the paint works looks very amazing. :thumbs_up_1:
I'm eager to wait to see more pics and finally the finished kit. :cool_2:

I can agree with you that the HP models QE is a nice kit. I have also had much fun with the building of my kit!
Below is a pic of my QE kit which i have finished for several years.

Best regards

Chris

Hello Christoph,

Your QE looks amazing! I just hope mine comes out half as nice! It will be quite some times before it is finished since there are parts that I'm still waiting for. Turrets from Admiralty, twin 20 mm from WEM, large carley floats (in the work I've been told).

Cheers :wave_1:

the pix is 1944, and as you know, she was having a major 9 month re-fit from 1942 to June 1943.

We can just make out the camouflage pattern that was applied after september 1943. I think she wore this pattern longer than the one I depicted but I liked the june to september pattern much more with all those curves and colours :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Martin,

I haven't done all that much on the QE these last few weeks but I'll try and put some new progress pics very soon. This model has a lot of parts to paint compared with other resin kits I've done so it seems to take forever to see any changes on the model :heh:

Cheers :wave_1:

Sylvain

mmmmmmmmm yammy i like it a lot.
Sylvain could you post some really close up picture of the deck so i can made up my mind to order this kit as well? i have several other HP kits mainly USS warships and the quality seems to vary a bit ,with newer releases being considerably better than older kits.Since i dont know when they released this i would rather rely on photographic evidence to make up my mind. From what i can tell from your pictures looks good so far .I would also be interested in the Malaya but i havent heard or seen anyone building that kit so far .

Hi angeleyes,

I'll try to upload some closeup shots of the decks on my next update. The deck detail is quite good but the mushroom vents look a bit skinny compared to other QE class ships that I have in the stash. Some parts are also asymmetrical but it's not something that is so obvious as to detract from the overall feel of the model. The biggest problem of the kit was the reference used. The profile Morskie book is quite good but innacurate in some places mainly on the aft superstructure. From good pictures that I was given there are also two structures on each side of the main structure that is missing from the kit. In defence of the model I can say that I have never seen those structures on any plans, even those by John Roberts. And the pics I've got don't show all the structures so it's a bit hard to know the exact shape but the roof is slanted toward the bow of the ship and there are some square windows with covers.

Also the kit dosen't have any PE so you will need parts from various PE sets. I used parts from the KGV, Warspite and Renown sets from WEM. I'm also using the Admiralty Modelworks paravane on this build and I'll be using their turrets when they are released to enhance the model further. If you really want to build a QE in WW2 fit then this model offers great opportunity for super detailing. The casting is very good with no air bubbles or any other major defects. There is a small amount of flash on some of the parts but those parts will mostly be replaced with PE parts so it's not a problem there :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers :wave_1:

Sylvain

Here is a cropped portion of a picture showing the structure I was talking about. The person who gave me the pics asked me not to plublish them to the web so that's why I used only a small part of the photo.

The structure is almost in the center of the pic almost directly aligned with the 4.5" mount. I don't know if this structure went behind the main tower or anything. I don't have any clearer shots of it but I'll maybe try to add this thing on the model.

Cheers :wave_1:

Well it took a long time but here are some new progress pics. I started adding some PE parts here and there and some fittings like the carley floats and paravanes. I will have to wait a couple of weeks before doing any more progress because I will be moving next week.
