Yup... Quite a huge ship.. 52cm and very catchy in my collection. Hope I can complete everything by tommorrow.

95% completed and still short of painting floatplane. And still trying to find a suitable anchor chain.

Thinking of scratch build or mod the crappy floatplane. But I'm guess, I'm too tired and I need to proceed to other project.

So just need to bear with the stock plane.

Yes, they were twin shaft ships. But the shaft should be basically parallel to the long axis of the ship, not slanted downward like some hold over from toy RC models. Uhem.

Your build is very good.. Regardless of the kits errors, you have produced a good result with a high quality assembly work and paintjob...

Most of the errors are concentrated into the bridge area. This photo from the Warship pictorial about RM heavy cruisers (this book could be helpful to all who are going to build this model as it features a 1/350th scale colour drawing of Pola with both side and vertical wiews) is useful for finding the most evident faults



- missing parts: the quadrapod and mainmast legs, and a small bandstand near the base of the quadrapod forward legs that housed a single 40mm/39 Vickers AA gun, plus an infinity of girders underneath each bridge level.

- inconsistent parts: secondary directors are nowhere near to the real thing; bridge railings should be higher, secondary guns' shields are too squared, and I also suspect the forward funnel cap to be underdimensioned. Rangefinders' armored covers on main turrets are wrong in shape. Small parts such as 37mm/54 Breda AA guns are, needless to say, mostly useless.

- hull issues: both stem and stern are wrong in shape, the bow should be vertical and more faired and the stem more rounded. Rudder is underdimensioned (which is strange as this was born as a dynamic model) and propellers' axles should be parallel to the keel line, not inclined

This is another photo, coming from the net, but present as well into the Warship pictorial: from this wiew, it appears that main guns' barrel are a bit short and too spaced; also, the flat surface of bridge walls and forward funnel is evident, those raised bands on the model should be obliterated. Out of curiosity, you can make out a pair of 40mm Vickers guns on the bandstands at the base of the forward funnel.

Hello, I am sorry to necro post, but I am having the hardest time figuring out what color to paint the base of the Pola. I have the Lifecolors Regia marina paint set #1 and was wondering if that is the paint you used. I am a big fan of the darker grey on your kit. I also tried mixing flat white and a flat gray and its not looking too good. Any help is greatly appreciated

for the floatplane,you can go for the trumpeter imam ro that will come with their 1:350 roma.
usually they sell their aircraft even in separate set..so..in a few you'll have a decent plane to fit on your pola!

however, the anti-fouling paint on the hull of italian ships was usually a dark green instead of red...i'm pretty sure that pola had a green one.

however nice model of a good looking ship!

Hi, just looking at this great build from you buddy, using it as inspiration for the forthcoming build of mine. I have two kits to finish off before starting this ship, but I'm looking forward to this one.

I was quite pleased with the price of this ship, �12 from Wonderland models site. What surprised me about this kit, after seeing the completed builds is the simplicity of it, a very small amount of parts go into her making, the end result is wonderful isn't it? An what I thought was good is the availability of after market parts for upgrade work. I have to date bought the "Sea Master" set that features main and secondary guns, a wooden deck by "Artwox" and a set of generic railings from White Ensign Models, links for the items follow.

Wood deck sheets I have never used before until I bought this one, an I have to say it's the missing dimension in ship building, no more masking, washes or deck detail is needed any more. I advise everybody to get these decks, the realism they give your work is second to non. The blanks are pre-cut, so they pop out, the wood is adhesive, so it goes straight onto the deck, the thickness can shrink the hight of only the thinnest deck detail but that's a small price to pay for the shear good looks of wood. I have heard people sand down the raised deck detail to help adhesion to the plastic.

I was having a little trouble finding rails but after contacting WEM they were good enough to recommend this set of generic rails for her, should be fun as I have never used PE rails before. For this reason I'm a little nervous about building Pola before I have practised with PE so I have bought a cheap Revell KGV in 1/570 scale and intend to buy some 1/600 RN rails that should fit just as good as I'm not that concerned with total accuracy.

Anyways, sorry to hijack your topic but just wanted to add some info on after market parts and also say it's a great build there mate, well done!!

You are doing the right thing-practice on a cheapie and then move on.
