Hi Guys,
This project is intended to be a very quick build up of Hasegawa's old 1/72 Curtis SOC-3 displayed atop WEM's own 1/72 USN WWII BB catapult. This will be my own contribution to the Coronado Library's year long display, "100 Years of US Naval Aviation". Many local San Diego IPMS'ers will be contributing to this, "going through the ages", type of display. The first two months is dedicated to the earliest days of US Naval aviation; its' birthplace being right here in San Diego. My Seagull display will fit into the second two months display going from the late 19-Teens through the beginning of the US involvement in WWII. We hope to see a lot of yellow wings from March 1st through April 30th!
So, I started on the Seagull last week by glueing all of the parts together, (well almost). The WEM catapult will be modified to fit a Brrokly Class CL. The SOC will be none other than one of USS Honolulu's birds; circa 1939. When I had the artwork done for my 1/350 CL-48 projects' SOC's, The decal manufacturer added Honolulu's a/c markings to its' already existing Yellow Wings Decals for pre-war SOC's. Special thanks go to Wayne Tevlin of Yellow Wings decals for doing the artwork for my Honolulu project; that must be finished by this years' end!!
On the Catapult so far, the center turntable will need to be moved and the walkways too. I have some good P6 catapult pics to study too.

Hi Guys,
Some more progress to share with those interested.
While the SOC itself awaits complete drying of the recently painted wing top, I began work on the catapult.
I've learned a few tricks in the past few years when working with p/e. if you don't want to mate p/e to p/e, then mate plastic to plastic. What I mean is; use small/easily hidden strip styrene attached to the inside of the p/e framework and then you'll be glueing plastic to plastic when forming a p/e box or the like.
It's as easy as it sounds, but you'll still need to use CA when attaching the strip styrene to the p/e.
Here is the catapult as it looks today; before receiving a base coat of paint.


Here are some pics of the YW decals specifically for the SOC attached to Honolulu.


Here's something. Should I use the decals for the propeller tips, the wing chevron and the green stripes for the vertical and horizontal stabilizers???

So how much of the Honolulu are you going to build for the base? Do you have a full 1/72 build hiding somewhere?

Here's a single pic of SOC before I go all out to finish it this w/e.
I still need to finish the catapult. Having acquiesced that this is an Iowa class catapult, I'm still planning to paint it in pre-war livery; as for the Honolulu's #1 bird!

Hi Guys,
Here are some pics of Honolulu's SOC after the painting and decal-ling are done. I still need to do the clear top coat and the canopy, then I'll attach the cowling.
The catapult is coming along, but the SOC took priority. Darn little time to do this sort of stuff when I have a 5th grade daughter whom always seems to need help with her over-abundance of homework!
I will categorize this project as a non-competition buid, as many of my personal practice rules are right out the window.

Hi Guys,
The SOC is basically finished. I did a 3-step canopy framework mask and paint session. This turned out fairly well. Once again, becoming a ship modeler has made building an a/c easier. Masking canopies and successfully painting them was once one of the greater challenges for me.

The size of the CAT is decieving, to me, unless your alligator vise is bigger than mine. I was expecting the CAT to be bigger / longer. It is looking good, too, though.

Hi Guys,
Well, it's finished. I had to fab-up the sled for the SOC as the WEM catapult did not inlcude one. I modified one for the SC-1 and made it work.
The wood base was intended to mount the yet finished 1/700 CVS-14, (hopefully end of this year), but it now has a new destiny!
The catapult is now permanently attached to the wood base, the sled is attached to the catapult permanently and the SOC is now permanently attached to the sled.
I had a name plate made to identify the SOC-3 Seagull as being from Cruiser Division 9, USS Honolulu CL-48; circa 1939.

Now, back to the 1/350 Honolulu!

This a/c and catapult display is now at the City of Coronado's Public Library in a showcase of models and memorabilia commemorating the US Navy's centennial celebration. This year long progressive display is in its' second 60 day period dedicated to the, "Golden Age of Naval Aviation"; the time period beginning at WWI's end to just before the beginning of US involvement in WWII.
In a little while, I'll have this display back in my hands and I'll need somewhere to put it permanently.
I hate to say it but this was a rush-job and as fulfilling as it can be to finish a modeling project, this was one of lesser excitement. The Coronado Library curator of displays is just thrilled, so that's going to be my best reward.
