This is a project I've been waiting for since I was six and started building models. My grandfather was Commanding Officer of Saint Paul from 08/29/1957 - 09/10/1958.

It's amazing what info they put in cruisebooks back then.

From the 1958 Saint Paul cruisebook. The original painting is hanging behind us in the pic above. He gave me the painting in his will, and after his death, I donated it to the USS Saint Paul Association.

Another personal connection with the ship. My father's medical exam, for his immigration to the United States, after my grandfather adopted him from a Japanese orphanage.I

Very interesting story, I'm looking forward to watching this project.
I built the box scale kit as a kid. It will be fun to see something nicer emerge here.

BTW, I found this on Youtube just now...

Gun tub removal has begun. The mounts for the catapults will go too.

With the new bridge?

I thought about building Saint Paul in 1968, but your 1958 conversion will be for sure educating also regarding the later fit.

Gun tubs removed. I was worried about getting the bow 20mm tubs off without damaging the bow bulwark, but it was easier than expected.

Another construction that interests me very much. Post-war cruisers are my blood type, so I will closely monitor the progress of the construction. The USS Boston and USS Salem are waiting for me ....

Your grandfather’s story and your connection really adds to the human interest in the build. What a great career. Hope you achieve everything you’d like to as well. Your shipbuilding is sure stellar. Liked how cleanly you cut up that deck.

Thanks. I managed to save most of the planking detail, but there are a few areas that need rescribing since the 3" tubs won't cover it. The hardest were the midships 40mm mounts that had to go. I was barely able to get a saw in there and cut enough that they snapped off cleanly.

Had to cut a bit off of the kit funnel base.

Nice.

Unfortunately, I have to remove that lovely mast. That's from a later refit. Here is a pic from my grandfather's time in command. At that time, she still had the original mast.

which funnel base, aft?

Forward. The new forward superstructure includes the area with the vents.

Model Monkey turrets, with Master barrels. After cutting off and cleaning up the blast bags from one kit turret, I think I may just make the rest out of green stuff.

They do indeed. I think they may be made for no blast bags. Looks like green stuff it is.

That's a much more reasonable barrel length.

I love the moment when you first sit back and recognize the ship.

total length of barrel & turret should be 1.8614"/4.728cm long. Charles F. Adams in the foreground I see. I have the 1/600 scale version by Airfix.

Just broke out the calipers. I got them at 1.914 by eyeballing it. I'm going to call that close enough. And yes, the ISW DDG-6 kit. Still haven't decided which to build yet.

Here is the 8"-55cal, 3-gun Turret layout with dimensions for CA-139 Class heavy cruisers:

As mentioned in an earlier post, I think you will need to open up the face of the turret and cut out all the plastic in order for the brass barrels to align (length-wise) correctly. As you can see in the illustration, the overall length of the barrel (33'-1.5") to c.l. of trunnions is probably key to proper orientation of the barrels. I wouldn't cut the brass barrels at this point until you've researched this a bit more (IMHO). Good luck w/your build!

Hope this helps,

ps - When I was aboard a FLETCHER Class DD in 1966-68, we operated with ST PAUL off & on while on Yankee Station. I remember seeing her steam past us in San Diego harbor when we were moored off Shelter Island - I still have a rather beat-up small photo I took of her that day.
