I’m currently building a model of HMS Dreadnought 1907 and I’m looking for to find something to read that would describe daily ship board life in the Royal Navy during this time period. Any suggestions? I am wading through Robert Massie’s Dreadnought, which is quite good about the overall state of things but not much from what the experience one would have on a personal level.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kurt

Kurt,

Try "The Royal Naval Officer's Jutland Pocket Manual" by WM James. This is a recent reprint of notes by the author on the ship-board routines of a British battleship of the era. You might also like to consider finding copies of two books to read by Lionel Yexley. These are "Our Fighting Sea Men" and "The Inner Life of the Navy." Both were published in the early 1900's. Yexley was an ex naval rating who later became a journalist, author and naval reformer and edited a newspaper called "The Fleet." His main concern was the conditions of service under which men served and this will be reflected in the books. Copies of "Our Fighting Sea Men" can be bought via a good second-hand book search engine but "The Inner Life of the Navy" is much rarer and may only be available through a lending library.
