Finally finished 1942, by Winston Groom (the guy who wrote Forrest Gump). The book covers the time frame from the Pearl Harbor attack, through all of 1942 and into early 1943, ending with the conclusion of the Guadalcanal and North African campaigns. That's just too much to pack into one book, IMO. While covering all theaters, the focus is on US related events, like the fall of the Philippines/Bataan Death March and the Guadalcanal campaign. Plus, lots of little factual errors that were annoying - like the Saratoga being one of the three US Carriers at the Battle of Midway (Sara didn't arrive at Pearl until the main events at Midway were over).

While it wasn't a bad book, I wasn't really impressed with it, either. It may be a good overview of those dark days for those who aren't students of history, but I wouldn't recommend it for a serious history buff or historian.

Now, onto Shattered Sword!
