Not sure if this has been put out here before, but it is listed in the newest issue of Warship International as an authoritative source. The site is operated by Dr Stephen Roberts, co-author of "Register of Ships of the U.S. Navy."

He has completed populating all entries for US Navy WWII attack transports.

There is also a section of French naval vessels, 1816 - 1859.
