Can anyone suggest a suitable source of plans for either of these classes of sloop? I am thinking of a 1/700 scratch build, so they do not need to be super detailed.

I saw that the Australian national archives list drawings for the Australian Grimsbys but could not make head nor tail of how to access them.

I have Arnold Hague book on the subject which is helpful for modifications carried out, but any help with drawings would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Don

Hi Don,

I am looking for this myself. I checked John Lambert but he hasn't drawn a set.

Have you tried either Dean's Marine or the Model Dockyard?

Presumably you have been into London and photographed HMS Wellington?

Cheers,

Rob Kernaghan

Thanks Rob. I have tried Deans Marine and Model Dockyard and they don't have anything.

Yes, I have quite a few pictures of Wellington, and if push comes to shove I might be able to draw some plans from photos, but they would not be very accurate. I suppose the National Maritime Museum is the best option, but I have never dealt with their plans department before and was somewhat daunted by the procedures on their website.

It seems a shame that these vessels get overlooked when they did sterling work especially on the UK to Freetown convoy routes and Yarra earned glory in the early days of the war with Japan. I suppose Johnnie Walker's brilliance with the Black Swan types tends to dazzle!

Don,

The guys at NMM are very easy to deal with and very helpful - and expensive!

Just email plansandphotos@nmm.ac.uk with what you want and they will get back to you - usually fairly quickly. The following is typical of their response:

Thank you for the e-mail.

We have 23 plans of Gannet (1878) in the collection.

Please let me have your full postal address so that I can send the relevant plans list with prices, method of payment, and terms & conditions to you.

Prices are:
14.40 (+VAT) per plan up to 10ft long
11.75 research & handling per order
8.23 postage & packing per orders to the UK (includes Recorded delivery).

I hope this is of some use to you.
Yours sincerely,
