Hey

Being a merchant navy fan, I found some interesting options on getting the plans, drawings, etc from the old ships, using inter-library loans across Germany university libraries. I have got a number of books and magazine yearbooks recently, and would like to present them, so you know what to expect, and would also list the useful plans in followups. I would be scanning the plans for my private use.

So, here we go.
The Motorship. A magazine promoting the diesel use in merchant marine. Many details on the engine types, and some interesting plans, some are good enough to build a model on them. I have the 1925, 1926 and 1935 issues. I would give it a "good".

Werft, Reederei, Hafen - a german magazine. I have a 1927's yearbook. Contains come GREAT plans, approximately 1 good detailed plan set per issue, and a number of detailed port schemes. Plus a few less detailed but enough for, say, 1/700 model. Mark - excellent.

British Ocean Tramps, Vol 1. by P.N. Thomas- great book. Many plans, a few color schemes, and some interesting information! Excellent!

On a hunch, would there be a mention anywere of a small riverine cargo ship called 'Dixmude'? She was built in i 1923 in a unidentified yard in Papenburg for - probably- a Belgian company.

Thanks in advance!

Hey

In the ones I have now, not ;(
But, I have loaned only a small fraction of all those nice yearbooks! I just think I cant really process more then 1-2 per month, and I can hold each 2 month long (in fact, i am surprised that I may loan them to home at all!)

I understand. The reason why I ask is that she's still around: only these days she is a stationary hulk (well-maintained) housing the student's sailing club that I was a member of in my college days. Spent many a night at the bar in that little ship.

Hey

Not from the first look. These yearbooks discuss mainly the ships laid down, built, launched that year...

All right, scheduled for scan next week - I have an access to an industrial scanner at work, so much faster and better to do it there.

Got the 30, 32, 33 and 41 issues (31 is missing).

The 1941 issue is quite interesting, here's the index (only modeling-relevant stuff, omitting all theoretical articles). Ships marked with + are adequately covered for making a model
+ New hungarian Danube-sea class ship "Kassa" - data, long. cut, lines, decks, engine room, davits, mult. in and out photos
New modification of a Do-18 flying boat - many photos
photos of a "modern minesweeper" and "twin screw rescue tug Arngast"
+ Turboelectric ships "Josif Stalin" and "Viacheslav Molotov" - photos, side, decks, engines
Launching of USS North Carolina - photo, different data and arrangement sketches. More data/sketches about launching arrangements later.
Diesel engine in shipping - a huge historical article covering the diesel engine development, and all companies doing ship diesels, with loads of photos. Contains photos of M/S Romagna, liners Victoria, Oranje, the first sulzer-diesel tug in Hamburg harbour, M/S Vulcania, Andrea Gritti, Tanker Franco Martelli, Rhine-express ship Koeln
New US tugs - photos of Edmond J Moran (controls and outside), H.T. Debardeleben (Kort propulsion and outside), interior of tug Crusader, tabular data.
+ 1000t barge for Danube - side, lines, photos for several versions
+ RMS Mauretania (1938) - large foldout plan of cutout, all decks, several photos, engineering plant plans,
Plan and photos of Stockton harbour, storehouse cutout
+Hafenunterhaltung III tug. Lines, side, deck
+Inspection cutter Carl Feddersen - side, deck, cuts, lines
A large report of a shipbuilding exhibition in Helsinki, many harbour photos of Crichton-Vulkan dockyard, photos of Coastal BB Ilmarinen, 3000t ship Orbice Thorden, a modern 7200t ship of C-V werft, many stand photos of exhibitors
Large report about Finland's harbours - photos and schemes (harbour and different elements) of Helsinki, Hamina, Kotka, Valkom, Lovisa, Turku/Abo, Pori
+ Motorships Selma Thorden and Kristina Thorden - Gen. Arrangement, decks, tech data. Photo in a exhibition report above.
+ Motor Tanker Braconda (Malmo built, Norwegian owned), Gen.Arr + decks, photos
Rotating current harbour cranes - loads of photos
+ Swimming transporter/loader for thick-liquid dredge
East river tunnel in New York
Electric harbour cranes in Hamburg - photos
Loading bridges development - photos, plans

Thats it. I will start scanning it today in about 2 hours, so if you are interested in a specific section - gimme a shout so I do it today!

Trying to get some information motor ship construction for pre-WWII motor ships. Specifically looking for info on the RAMB II, an Italian bananna ship which later became Tito's (of Yugoslavia) yacht.

Best case would be engine room layout or general layout of the RAMB, but barring that:

In general, would European built motor ships of the interwar era have a void under the engine room? or tankage? or would the engine room be directly on the hull? Or did it vary?

Hey

So far, I dont have the RAMB's plans. Which year was she constructed? It could well be reflected in the WRH magazines on that or following years...

Drop me your email per PM, I would select a few plans for european motorships with layout plans, and send them to you.

Cheers
Petr

The RAMB I thru IV were built in 1937 and 1938 in Italy for the Italian govt's bannana monoply company. Trade was from Italian colonies to Italy.

If you can lay your hands on Shipbuilding Cyclopedia, published in 1920, it has loads of merchant ship plans, including a lot of the US War Emergency ships from WW1.

PeterG,
I've sent you a PM regarding m.v. Ramb

PetrOs,
Do you have anything on 'Shanghai Maru' or her sister ship 'Nagasaki Maru' built by Wm Denny for NYK and launched in August 1922 and March 22 respectively? It may be a little early for your 'yearbooks' but any info most welcome.

Thanks

Jim S
