Just completed this model of the Gneisenau. It's the old 1/400 kit from Heller. I used the Tom's Modelworks detail set, and painted her as in February 1942 for Operation Cerberus, the "Channel Dash."

The kit has several flaws, some of which I did not correct. One which I DID correct, and I'm rather proud of how it came out, is the location of "C" Turret. Heller has it too far astern; I moved it up where it belongs.

Hope you like her!

Nice job on moving the aft turret forward. I think this is the first 1/400 model I've seen on which this major flaw was corrected. Did you cut off the barbette and moved it forward, or did you sand it down and built up a new one? On my 1/400 kit, before I sold it, I planned to replace the whole main deck (and other wooden decks) and build up every detail again. But then the Dragon kit was announced and I sold my Heller kit on ebay ...

I like the light blue on the turrets, I think it is close (and in scale) to what they may have used on the actual ships. Most modellers depict this colour too dark.

Happy modelling ~ Olaf!

Thank you Olaf! Yes, I cut the barbette free from the deck and moved it forward. I then filled in the hole in the deck (which was partially covered by the barbette in its new position) with sheet styrene and putty.

Hello Jimmy - not as much as I would like! Here is a great reference site on the Gneisenau: http://www.scharnhorst-class.dk/gneisen ... _menu.html
and another: http://www.kbismarck.org/forum/viewtopi ... 1&start=15

But neither one really provides that much help with the placement of the life rafts. I saw a few rafts mounted on the sides of the hangar (in the 1942 Operation Cerberus illustration) and went with that. Of course, that's one of the details that would change a lot depending on the period you're trying to represent.

Paul, the period I'm referring to this ship is at about the end of 1940, the ship was in the Baltic Camo.

I had been in these links before coming here, have no idea for the locations. Thanks for your response. :wave_1:

Hello,

In reference to you moving "C" turret forward, I believe the hull is actually .437 inches too short. By increasing the length of the hull will sove the turret location and lengthened the hull to it's proper scale length.

Thank you,
Mike

This is an old build of mine that just got bumped up, but thanks! I realize the blue turret tops may not be accurate.
