Great work! It has already been a pleasure to follow this build.

And funny, I recently read that the hull issues of this kit (separate pieces) are 'unfixable'.
I guess good modeling speaks louder than 1000 words… :)

Cheers,

Marijn

Amen to that, Marijn!

This is really turning out to be a first class Yamato build. Loving it! :worship_1:

I think just having the right means and tools and know how will carry you long way!
I remember when I used to use normal putties for seam works. It always ended in pulling my hair out, untill I discovered super glue.
I just think it's the best hands down. It's fast, precise and it creates a hard surface if you need to scribe or something on it.

Well another days work done. Reminds me again why working when you're feeling down is probably not the best idea.

So I started working on the stern. I finished the support etches on the otherside and got everything primed and ready. I painted the linoleum strips. While on the weathering step I was using a hairdryer to speed up the drying of oils I heard this massive crack sound and the whole flight deck just popped out only hanging by the catapult stands. After few minutes of patience, I managed to glue everything back
just the way it was, even the support beams underneath gave in exactly where they were connected to the deck thus not a single one of them broke off! :cool_1: :cool_1: :cool_1:

So work continued with more painting and after it was done I attached the wooden deck. Fit was perfect and everything was well untill I was peeling off the bow section off the sheet when small strip on the edge decided to break. It's a bit visible ( you'll see later) but it's not super bad and I think I can manage to make it disappear when I stain the deck hopefully.

But here's some pictures!

After the linoleum strips were painted I masked them with tape and made some lines with black paint to simulate the concrete slabs??? on the aircraft deck.
It creates more intresting look for it not sure how visible they actually were to be honest.

Image

Then the first color of gray airbrushed inside the panels. First filling the unpainted surface then misting over the black.

Image

2nd layer of more thinned and lightened gray.

Image

And a 3rd layer with using a sheet of straight piece of paper as a mask.

Image

Same thing for the bow but not as defined.

Image

The linoleum strips were first preshaded black. Then the usual shading with few different shades of brown. After that I tinted individual panels with different filters ranging from blue to red and gray.

I'm hoping to get my strenght up so I can resume the massive painting of the hull next weekend. I can just predict the 12 hour marathon on the paint booth...

Another brilliant idea 'rescued'! (Fear not! I will make sure it's put to good work)

Cheers, Jabb

I stained the deck.

First with brown and red oils.

Then with dark gray for the final look.

I'll give some sanding for wear and tear a bit.

The battle damage is pretty visible but atleast it's not going through the whole deck. I hope I can still find a way to mask it more.

What was used to glue the wood deck down?

None, it's self adhesive.

Now that I have time to think about it, I ordered a new deck as this project will be far too nice to let it go down for such a obviously seen thing!
It's fine as the deck is fairly cheap

Looks very good, but you really need to slow down  . Paintwork and deck are very much to my liking. I'm still at the filling stage. Somehow I didn't have the courage to fill gaps with ca glue and I went with the putty/Mr. Surfacer 500 option...dreadful sanding though.

Keep it up.

The ship ain't gonna paint itself they say.

I decided to start on the lower hull painting as it needs a couple of days of curing before the rest can be painted.

Preshaded with cocoa brown with a hint of black.

I cut corners a bit and didn't paint the bottom all the way. The shading took about 2 hours to airbrush.

I'll continue with insignia red filling the panels. Then I'll let it sit for a while and bring out the masking tape for the last stage!

It's okay to just say "WOW" right?

Loving the work, can't wait to see more.

Wouldn't the deck buckle over time? Staining the deck will probably make it even more likely to get severely buckled...
But maybe you might not encounter this issue with your previous builds like the PoW...right?

Hey Aop,

I've never ran into any issues with the deck peeling off. All of my previous ones are still firmly attached. I use water when I attach them so they become easier to handle and if you have ever used pontos decks they are REALLY sticky.

And the first layer of red on the hull.

I used insignia red H327 and a bit of H17 cocoa brown to darken it.
Unlike gray the red paint doesn't cover as well, so you can basicly spray the whole area first then really dig in with heavier coats to reduce the preshade showing through.

Added a bit more contrast

I see...that's quite lucky for you, as many people here (including me) have not so good experience with the decks. My Pontos Tirpitz deck buckle like crazy. I did left some unattached pieces exposed to open air, but the other newly attached ones also buckled...

The hull is coming along very nicely! :woo_hoo: Really looking forward to more weathering! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Sorry to hear that.

The way I attach them is I actually really grind them to the surface for about 10 minutes after attaching them using like a hobby knife handle to roll on them to get all the air out
and make them really stick.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try.
Does using water also help? I never tried that before.

The water helps you getting the deck into position, just like the instructions tell you to!

Same here! I really don't know they specified that! Thanks for the info! Just too late for us...already tried fixing the buckling with surgeries and superglue...

Thanks,
Aop

I assume you mixed some clear into the paint? Looking very good there!

What color did you use for the linoleum btw?
