Hello, friends !!

I want to share with you one of my pas models that brought to me a lot of satisfaction...
The model is of the Japanese ironclad ram IJN KOTESTU that was the first ironclad ship of the Japanese Navy.

She was bought in 1869 from the United States, but her history is a bit more interesting.

Infact sha was a french-built ironclad warship ordered by the Confederate Navy (during the American Civil War) in 1863 and launched in 1864 with the name of Shipnx (together with a sister ship named Cheops)
But the French government stopped the sale and sized the ship.

Then, the builder (L'Arman Shipwright of Bordeaux) sold the ship to the Denmark where was re-christened Staerkodder (Strong Otter), at that time in war with Prussia and at the same time sold the sister ship to Prussian Navy with the name of Prinz Adalbert.

But the war was near the end and the ship was never given to Denmark.
The builer, then, secretely, sold again the ship to Confederate Navy and she was christened again, but with the name of CSS Stonewall.

The Union Navy sent the USS Kearsarge and the USS Sacramento to stop her, but the "formidable" Stonewall escape from the blocade, sailing toward the american coast. But fed days later, the Civil war ended and the Stonewall arrived first to Nassau and after to Cuba were her captain Thomas Jefferson Page, had the new about the lost of the war from Confederation and sold the ship to the Spain governor in Cuba.

The Spain, in 1866, gave back the ship to the United States, after a great pushing from american ambassador in Madrid.

After a couple of year of silence, the ship was sold in 1868 from United States to the Bakufu (Shogun) of Japan, at that time in civil war against the Japanese Emperor. 30.000 US$ were paid for the ship, and last 10.000 US$ should be paid at the end of the delivery in Bakufus' hands.
In this period she was named KOTETSU (in japanese "ironclad")

But, before to be delivered, because the stop from european forces of all sales of weapons to the rebels, the ship was instead delivered to the new Meiji Government (Emperor of Japan) and so she sharted her career in Japanese Navy with the name of Kotestu (and later Adzuma) playing an important role in the Boshin War.

She fought in the invasion of Hokkaid Isle; in the Battle of Mikado Bay and in the Battle of Hakodate.

In 1888 she was renamed Adzuma and spent her last years in harbours duties, until 1888 when she was scrapped.

She was a "formidable" ship for her enemies. She was armed with a massive 300 prd (the only that seems was ever built for a ship) Armstrong gun in the protect forecastle (firing in chase or broadside) and two 70 pdr Armstrong guns in a central iron-protected fixed tower, firing both broadside, in chase and back.

The model is completely scratchbuilted using different materials : wood, metal, plastic, paper

I have built this model in 1/75 scale using different sources : plans from USA, Japan and Germany, pictures from National Archives, information found on books and on internet.

Now some pics of the model... many pics of the particulars were took during the contruction.

I hope you'll like this inusual ship

Nice modeling

Jp

A fantastic build of a seldom seen vessel! I love ships of the transition era.

Thanks, MichelB

I love such ships too... often they're ugly and strange in look, but are really something of unusual.

here other pics of the KOTETSU, took during the building of the model and showing better some close-up of the protected tower.

I hope you'll like.

ciao

This is beautiful modelling... this what people outside the hobby would appreciate and what many of us on here call REAL modelling. Stunning work :thumbs_up_1:

Ciao JP, ho scritto al sito AMIREL ( 'info@amirel.it'; 'amirel@libero.it') perchè ti recapitassero via email questo mio messaggio.

Ringrazio e saluto.

Hello JP, I wrote to the site AMIREL ('info@amirel.it'; 'amirel@libero.it') because you tabel email my message. Now I saw that haunt this forum, I joined and I send the same email.

I'm Dario Aliprandi AMON in Milan (http://www.nonsolovele.com) and I was very interested in the model "Battleship Japanese Kotetsu / AZUMA" I've seen on the site built by Cusati http://www.sullacrestadellonda. en / model ... otetsu.htm.

I would like to build one sailor and I was wondering if I could get information from Cusati of drawings, photos and more.

Thank you and goodbye.

Very interesting, unusual, rarley to see and also a little bit funny looking shape of ship (particularly this greek galley like bow for ramming).

However, awesome built and a jewel of model at least! My deep respect for this stunning result! :-)

Or in Richmond Va after all she was a CSS ship first. Amazing work, stunning. I was collecting information on this ship with thoughts of doing it in 1/350 scale. The pictures you posted will be a great help toward that goal. Thanks for posting and congratulations.

Hello!
I live in Otobe-Town, Hokkaido, Japan.

I can not speak English, so I will excuse myself for google translation.

Otobe is the last battle of the Boshin War, the place where the Meiji New Government forces landed counterattack with the koutesu you made as flagship in the Hakodate war.

And this year in 2018, the Meiji New Government forces landed in the Otobe department, a memorable year of 150 years, we made an event in the town on May 20 th land.

After that, if you were looking for a model of koutestu on the Internet, I found your work and I am surprised because it is so wonderful. :thumbs_up_1:

Actually I am a staff member of the Otobe Town Board of Education.

From the other day, it was said that it would be nice to put koutetsu 's model in place of the landing monument.

Can you give me this model if you wish? Of course, I will pay the money. However, if the amount is large, you may be asked to wait for a while.

Sorry for suddenly rude questions.

But, I saw the image, I definitely wanted to put this very wonderful model in the place of the monument.

Rude remarks, please please reply

I agree with all the above. It is a very impressive model, very realistic, and finely crafted.
