Post subject:  CVL-22 Independence Dragon. Finished! (pfff)

Hi everybody. As I am waiting for the surface mail to bring the IJN"Shokaku" home, I am training myself with this beautiful carrier as to get accustomed once again with ship modeling (I am an aircraft guy basically!)
So here are some pics of my WIP. I usually paint and weather the model during the building process. It seems natural to me as when the deck is on with the island and funnel, things are much more difficult! The basic paint is Gunze Navy blue H54, White Ensign deck blue 20a, and oil paint to built filters and weathering. L'Arsenal is providing everything you need to improve the already very good plastic parts from Dragon, and the magic of uncle Jacques is evident in the close-up pics. I use the great Warship pictorial as a reference, a great help when compare to the poor Dragon instructions, and when I say poor! As on the pictures on the Warship pictorial, I did paint some spots with Ocean Grey, put some maskol using a small piece of sponge, then Navy Blue 5N. Maskol was then removed and here you are! So here is the first batch of pics, comments are warmly welcome! Cheers, jean. :wave_1: :wave_1:

Thanks Gentlemen! Here are more pics of my WIP on the ship. All the SBDs will be in the hangar, ant it's true the non folding wings ate all the space! The floating nets baskets are also fixed as are the davits ,chocks are from l'Arsenal those of the kit are grossly undersized. I have started to work on the platforms around the deck, but nothing will be fixed until I put the Pontos deck which I am waiting from Luckymodel in Hong-Kong. Best regards, jean. Salut Nicolas! :wave_1: :wave_1:

Beautiful and very realistic weathering. Superb!

Thanks a lot Steve, but it's a long and tedious job. Working with oils is certainly the best way to achieve a realistic wear, but looking at the pics of the real thing helps to remain credible! Cheers! Jean. :wave_1: :wave_1:

my hat's off to anyone who attempts a Dragon kit. Microscopic parts and postage stamp instructions. If you will forgive picking a bit, but SODs never served on COLs the fixed wings took up too much room and they were being phased out of front ling service. My father was fighter director on USS Monterrey CVL 26 and he said they carried TBF/Ms and F6Fs. Anyway, good luck, you may inspire me to try one.

Here are some more pics of the Isle and the four stacks. They will be weathered before being glued in place, but as I wrote before , only when the Pontos deck will be fixed, and I do not have it yet! Have a great WE, and remember that tomorrow will be the 70th anniversary of Bloody Iwo-Jima! Cheers.

That is correct, but as I depict the CL in its early days in 43, the SBD are still on board. Anyway the deck will have TBM and F6F. Cheers :thumbs_up_1:

Hi Sbouba,

Very nice updates! I am really getting to like this class of ship. Just one thing (if you don't mind :wave_1: ), if you put the elevators down (area more visible), the area around the elevator was painted deck gray and a band of black on top of about 180 cm. For reference, see http://www.researcheratlarge.com/Ships/CVL/1943HangarWarmUp.html. (Thanks to Tracy White for the information)

Looking forward for more updates!

Very nice planes! Myself I have the Princeton kit and a WEM set in my stash. I wondered if avPontos deck would be useful to me because of the pre-painted deck number, I consider to buy Artwox. I hope my planes will be as lively as yours.

Your work on the bridge, stacks and platforms is noteworthy, very nicely done. You hangar work will add interest to the interior once you get the flight deck on. I have often thought of gitting this, but;.......I will be following your build.

If by "served" you strictly mean during combat, then you are correct. Otherwise, CVL-22 carried SBD-4s and -5s until the end of July, 1943. She was already in the Pacific at this point and had operated with SBDs for over three months. So, it can be correct to have SBDs in use on the model with either the 5" or quad 40mm guns.

Hello Gents!
Work is progressing on my project and now the hull is fixed on the wooden base where the sea has been simulated using Pierre Marchal technic. I drilled holes along both side of the hull, using pics as references to make the pomp exits, and I am looking for a convincing way to simulate those water jets. I can now work more safely around the hull as I do not have to touch the model anymore, thus limiting the risks of breaking something. The deck is fitting without too much trouble and now I wait for the postman and the Pontos deck, I know it's on the way! Cheers to you all, Jean.

I am glad you do! I keep on adding details along the hull to make this latter as complete as possible before working along with the soon to arrive deck. Some details were also added to the funnel in the form of antennas with their own platforms. Pics soon to follow, best regards, Jean. :wave_1: :wave_1:
